Server information handling system LED indication lights and other illumination devices are selectively illuminated based upon override configuration settings pushed down from a data center administrative tool. A chassis management controller that manages a blade or rack with plural server information handling systems overrides indication light illumination at blade or rack components, such as power supply and I/O modules. Power saved by reducing indication light illumination is allocated to support operation of one or more server information handling systems.

Server information handling system indicator light management

A chassis may include a plurality of power supply units and a controller. The power supply units may be configured to deliver electrical energy to information handling resources disposed in the chassis. The controller may be communicatively coupled to the power supply units and configured to: receive operational parameters associated with the plurality of power supply units; receive user configuration parameters governing operation of components of the chassis; and based at least on the operational parameters and the user configuration parameters, determine if the controller and the plurality of power supply units are capable of operating in an enhanced power performance mode, wherein when operating in the enhanced power performance mode, one or more power supply units that would otherwise operate as idle redundant power supplies in absence of the enhanced power performance mode are oversubscribed to allocate electrical energy to the information handling resources disposed in the chassis.

A first operating condition and a second operating condition at a power supply unit (PSU) are determined at a first time. A power conversion efficiency of the PSU is determined at the first time. A first entry at a power conversion efficiency profile is generated, the first entry associating the first power conversion efficiency with the first operating condition and the second operating condition.

System and method for providing multi-dimensional power supply efficiency profiles

In accordance with embodiments of the present disclosure, an information handling system may include at least one information handling resource and a controller. The controller may be configured to receive signals from a plurality of power supply units, each signal indicative of a temperature associated with a respective power supply of the plurality of power supply units. The controller may also be configured to determine, for each of the plurality of power supply units, a respective derating limit based on the respective signal indicative of the temperature for such power supply unit. The controller may be further configured to communicate messages to each of the plurality of power supply units, each message indicative of the respective derating limit determined with respect to such power supply unit.

Systems and methods for non-uniform power supply unit load sharing

A system includes power supply units (PSUs) to supply power to components. For each PSU, a power conversion efficiency profile is determined. A maximum amount of power consumed during operation of the components is determined. A minimum number of PSUs capable of providing the maximum amount of power is determined. A first amount of power consumed at inputs of the minimum number of PSUs is calculated based on the maximum amount of power and based on the determined power conversion efficiency profile of each of the PSUs. A first number of PSUs to engage is determined, the first number greater than the minimum number of PSUs, wherein a total amount of power consumed at inputs of the first number of PSUs during operation of the system is less than the first amount of power, the determining based on the power conversion efficiency profile of each PSU.

Power supply engagement and method therefor

An information handling system includes a plurality of power supply units (PSUs) to supply power to one or more system components. For each PSU of the plurality of PSUs, a power conversion efficiency profile for the PSU is determined using a power management control module of the information handling system. The power conversion efficiency profile represents a power conversion efficiency of the PSU for each of one or more power outputs capable of being supplied by the PSU. The power management control module determines a total amount of power to be supplied to a load of the information handling system, and engages a select number of PSUs to provide the total amount of power based on the total amount of power and the power conversion efficiency profiles of the PSUs.

A power supply unit of an information handling system determines that a power consumption module of the information handling system is available. If the power consumption module is available, the power supply unit measures input power of the power supply unit and provides a representation of the input power to the power consumption module in response to receiving a power measurement request from the power consumption module. If the power supply unit determines that the power consumption module is not available, the power supply unit measures input power of the power supply unit and stores a representation of the input power at the power supply unit independent of a power measurement request from the power consumption module.

A demand based power re-allocation system includes one or more subsystems to assign a power allocation level to a plurality of servers, wherein the power allocation level is assigned by priority of the server. The system may throttle power for one or more of the plurality of servers approaching the power allocation level, wherein throttling includes limiting performance of a processor, track server power throttling for the plurality of servers. The method compares power throttling for a first server with power throttling for remaining servers in the plurality of servers and adjusts throttling of the plurality of servers, wherein throttled servers receive excess power from unthrottled servers.

A method may include: calculating approximate power requirements of components, the components supplied with electrical energy from a plurality of power supplies, each of one or more of the plurality of power supplies capable of being enabled and disabled from supplying electrical energy to the components; determining a set of possible configurations of the plurality of power supplies such that for each possible configuration, enabled power supplies of the possible configuration have adequate aggregate capacity to deliver the approximate power requirements and switching to the possible configuration from a then-present configuration would require no more than one of then-disabled power supplies be enabled and no more than one of then-enabled power supplies be disabled; and determining which of the set of possible configurations has the highest expected power efficiency.

System and method for improving power supply efficiency

An information handling system having plural processing modules, such as an information handling system blade chassis having plural information handling system blades, allocates power by determining an actual load sharing power loss associated with plural power supplies and applying the actual load sharing power loss to determine how much power to allocate to the information handling system modules. A chassis manager determines actual load sharing power loss by retrieving power information from plural power supplies. The actual load sharing power loss replaces a worst-case load sharing power loss assumed value to increase the amount power available for allocation to the information handling system modules.

System and method for managing information handling system power supply capacity utilization based on load sharing power loss

A method for wear leveling in an information handling system including multiple power supply units (PSUs) is provided. The method includes maintaining each PSU in one of multiple different operational states, collecting data relating to the use of each PSU, storing the collected data, and automatically changing the operational state of at least one of the PSUs based at least on the collected data regarding the use of each PSU in order to level the wear on the PSUs.

Systems and methods for power supply wear leveling in a blade server chassis

Infrastructure power resources of a chassis information handling system are made available to run chassis information handling system modules when infrastructure devices are not using the power resources. For example, cooling fans that cool information handling system modules supported by an information handling system chassis run at variable speeds having variable power consumption. A power reserve maintained to run the cooling fans at full speed if needed is made available to information handling system modules when under power management by a chassis manager.
