A hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) includes an internal combustion engine, an electric traction motor, a motor/generator, and a transmission. A launch control system includes a controller having one or more processors programmed to (A) operate the HEV in a vehicle launch preparation phase while the HEV is at a standstill, including (i) commanding the internal combustion engine to an engine speed launch target, (ii) performing a spark retardation on the internal combustion engine to limit wheel torque and generate an engine airflow torque reserve, and (iii) commanding zero torque to the electric traction motor; and (B) operate the HEV in a vehicle launch phase, including (i) reducing or removing the spark retardation, and (ii) commanding the electric traction motor to operate at a predetermined torque, to thereby utilize the engine airflow torque reserve in combination with the electric traction motor to provide increased vehicle acceleration.

Torque control techniques for a multi-motor electrified powertrain of an electrified vehicle include determining a total torque request to be satisfied by the multi-motor electrified powertrain, wherein a first electric motor is connected to a crankshaft of an engine via a belt as part of a belt-driven starter-generator (BSG), estimating a torque loss associated with the belt based on stored data and an engine speed or a BSG speed, determining an optimized torque split of the total torque request between the first electric motor and a second electric motor based on the estimated belt torque loss and to minimize battery power, determining torque commands for the engine and the first and second electric motors based on the determined optimized torque split, and controlling the multi-motor electrified powertrain based on the determined torque commands for the engine and the first and second electric motors.

An engine torque control method for an electrified vehicle having a series hybrid powertrain with at least two electric traction motors includes, in response to detecting an open-to-closed state transition of a drive shaft disconnect system configured to selectively connect and disconnect a first axle system or a pair of first wheels of the electrified vehicle from a first electric traction motor of the series hybrid powertrain, determining an optimum engine torque for the open-to-closed state transition based on a set of parameters for the open state of the drive shaft disconnect system, determining engine torque constraints for the open state and the closed state of the drive shaft disconnect system, applying the engine torque constraints to the optimum engine torque for the open-to-closed state transition to obtain a final engine torque command, and controlling an engine of the series hybrid powertrain based on the final engine torque command.

Engine torque control during wheel shaft disconnect transitions on series hybrid powertrains

A torque control system for a multi-motor range-extended electrified vehicle (REEV) having an electric all-wheel drive (eAWD) system includes a control system configured to utilize an unfiltered driver demand for engine torque determination and for predicting a front/rear axle torque split of an electrified powertrain of the REEV, the unfiltered driver demand being indicative of a torque request to be satisfied by the electrified powertrain, obtain a filtered driver demand that is damped or delayed compared to the unfiltered driver demand, and utilize the filtered driver demand for controlling a front/rear axle torque split by actuating electric motors of the electrified powertrain, wherein an engine torque delay is mitigated or eliminated thereby increasing the electrical energy to a battery system for increased availability in actuating the electric motors to control the front/rear axle torque split.

Predictive torque split for engine torque determination in multi-motor electrically all-wheel drive vehicles

A control system for an electrified powertrain of a battery electric vehicle (BEV) includes an accelerator pedal and a controller configured to determine maximum and minimum values for driver pedal position based on a first position of the accelerator pedal indicative of a first driver pedal position, determine whether the accelerator pedal position remains constant relative to the first position, when the accelerator pedal position does not remain constant and moves to a second position indicative of a second driver pedal position, detect that driver pedal position is increasing when the second driver pedal position is greater than the first minimum value and setting the first maximum value to the second driver pedal position and detect decreasing driver pedal position when the second driver pedal position is less than the first maximum value and setting the minimum value to the second driver pedal position.
