In a communication system, a translation server individually associates session control servers with transfer control servers. One of the session control servers receives a registration for a User Equipment (UE) over a first network. The translation server associates the UE with the session control server in the data structure. The session control server exchanges first control signaling with the UE to establish a media session over the first network. The translation server receives a session transfer request for the UE from a second network. The translation server processes the data structure to identify the transfer control server that is associated with the session control server that is associated with the UE. The translation server transfers the session transfer request to the transfer control server. The transfer control server exchanges second control signaling with the second network to transfer the media session from the first network to the second network.

Media session transfer between communication networks

When a UE has a first bearer with a gateway via a first base station and the UE engages in session setup signaling with a session server via that first bearer to set up a media session, the network may establish for the UE a second bearer via a second base station, and may the second bearer for communication of media content of the session while using the first bearer for communication control signaling for the session. In practice, the first base station could be a macro base station that operates on licensed frequency spectrum, while the second base station could be a small cell that operates on unlicensed frequency spectrum. The disclosed process can thereby help to offload communication of session content to be via the small cell instead of via the macro base station, while maintaining session control signaling to be via the macro base station.

Dynamic management and use of bearers for media communication

Examples disclosed herein provide systems, methods, and software for managing service modification requests in a serving gateway. In one example, a method of operating a serving gateway includes identifying an incoming service modification from a packet data network gateway and determining whether the incoming service modification is permitted based on policy data. The method further includes, if the incoming service modification is permitted, allowing the incoming service modification to proceed across the Long-Term Evolution network. The method also provides, if the incoming service modification is not permitted, altering the incoming the incoming service modification based on the policy data.

Serving gateway policy enforcement

In an LTE network, an MME processes network status information to transfer aggregated data to an ANDSF. The ANDSF processes a request from a wireless communication device that indicates device location and the aggregated data to generate an information response indicating a priority between the LTE network and a non-LTE network at the device location. The ANDSF transfers the information response for delivery to the wireless communication device. The wireless communication device processes the information response to select between the LTE network and a non-LTE network at the device location.

Network selection support for wireless communication devices

Embodiments of the present invention direct a mobile device to communicate using a particular radio access technology when multiple access technologies are available. Many mobile devices have the capability to use multiple radio access technologies. The process of providing access guidance to the mobile device at a point in time is described herein as a radio access discovery and selection event. Embodiments of the present invention may complete the event using only two messages. In one embodiment, the first message is a SIP OPTIONS message communicated from the mobile device to the access guidance component. This message identifies the mobile device and the mobile device's present location. In one embodiment, the location identification information is communicated within the PANI header. In response, the access guidance component communicates a preferred radio access technology within a SIP 200 OK message.
