A transmission includes an input drive shaft, a drive gear, an idler gear, and a driven gear. The drive gear is rotationally fixed to the input drive shaft which, in turn, may but not necessarily, be powered by an engine. The idler gear may include a second set of gear teeth mounted to a bearing wherein the second set of gear teeth are formed from polymeric material. The second set of gear teeth for the idler gear may be in meshing engagement with the first set of gear teeth. The driven gear may include a third set of gear teeth in meshing engagement with the second set of gear teeth. The driven gear may be rotationally fixed to a pump shaft for a transmission pump. The input drive shaft, the drive gear, the idler gear, and the driven gear are configured to power a transmission pump.

Polymeric gear

A continuously variable automatic transmission having a direction selection mechanism with both friction and binary torque transmitting devices. The transmission includes a torque converter which drives a ring gear of a planetary gear assembly. The sun gear of the planetary assembly drives the input of a variable ratio device. In one embodiment, the friction brake is disposed between a planetary gear carrier and a stationary housing or ground and is engaged to provide reverse direction of travel. The binary clutch is disposed between the ring gear and the planet carrier and, when engaged, locks the planetary gear assembly and provides forward direction of travel. In other embodiments, a binary brake is disposed between the planetary gear carrier and the housing and is engaged to provide reverse travel and a friction clutch is disposed between the ring gear and the planet carrier and, when engaged, locks the planetary assembly and provides forward travel.

Continuously variable transmission with direction selection mechanism

An engine gear drive assembly may include first and second taper gears and a biasing member. The first taper gear may be rotationally and axially fixed to the first rotary engine component. The second taper gear may be rotationally fixed to the second rotary engine component and axially displaceable relative to the second rotary engine component. The biasing member may bias the second taper gear in a first axial direction into engagement with the first taper gear.

Engine tapered gear assembly

A scissor gear assembly may include first and second gears, a friction plate, and a biasing member. The first gear may have a first number (n) of gear teeth extending from a perimeter thereof. The second gear may have a second number (m) of gear teeth extending from a perimeter thereof and may be concentrically mounted relative to the first gear and rotatable relative to the first gear. The second number (m) of gear teeth may be greater than the first number (n) of gear teeth. The friction plate may be rotationally fixed relative to the first gear. The biasing member may have a first end axially fixed relative to the first gear and a second end axially biasing the second gear and the friction plate into engagement with one another.

Engine scissor gear assembly

An internal combustion engine comprises a crankshaft having a helical spur gear mounted for rotation therewith and a balancer. The balancer includes a balancer housing and first and second balance shafts rotatably carried in the balancer housing about laterally spaced parallel axes. A first gear is mounted on the first balance shaft and driven by the helical spur gear at a speed determined by the crankshaft. A second gear is mounted on the second balance shaft for meshing engagement with the first gear for rotation in a direction opposite to the first gear. The helical spur gear and the first and second gears have teeth yielding an involute contact ratio of approximately 3 and a total contact ratio of approximately 5 to thereby reduce gear rattle. One of the balancer gears is aluminum and the other balancer gear is grey cast iron.
