The present invention relates to benzylidene indanones of general formula 1. The compounds exhibited tubulin polymerisation inhibition. A series of compounds 2-benzylidene 3-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl) indanones having general formula 1 were synthesized from gallic acid through a chemical process. 2-(3,4-Methylenedioxybenzylidine), 3-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl), 4,5,6-trimethoxyindanone (8), a representative compound of this series possessing the molecular formula CHO, was synthesized from gallic acid and exhibits potent anticancer activity. Compound 8 was evaluated for acute oral activity in Swiss albino mice and found to be safe up to 300 mg/kg body weight. The anticancer activity of the compounds has been determined, in order to obtain new potent and cost effective molecules using an in vitro cytotoxicity assay. 

Benzylidene indanones and processes for preparation and use thereof

The present invention provides a process for production of an anticancer taxoid brevifoliol of the formula I from plants belonging to the genusby first extracting the dried and pulverized leaves of the plant with an alcohol preferably at a temperature in the range of 20-40&#xb0; C. and then. concentrating the solvent to obtain an alcoholic extract. The alcoholic extract obtained is then adsorbed with an adsorbent and the resulting adsorbed material is then dried at a temperature ranging from 20-50&#xb0; C. for 4-48 hours. The dried adsorbed material is then extracted with a combination of an aliphatic solvent and a chlorinated solvent successively and concentrated to obtain a residue. The residue is subjected to gross fractionation using column chromatography such as silica gel, florosil and silicic acid followed by chromatography with a suitable adsorbent to get brevifoliol.

This invention provides a plant growth regulatory activity of a new biologically active synthetic molecule methanone-(3',4&#x2032;,5&#x2032;-trimethoxy) phenyl, 1-naphthyl, 2-O-4&#x2033;-ethyl but-2&#x2033;-enoate. More particularly, the invention relates to the potent plant growth promoting activity of a gallic acid derivative having a structure represented by Formula 1 and a molecular formulae CHO. This invention also provides a novel process for preparation of said molecule from a naturally occurring compound and testing it for growth regulating activity using Bacopa test system developed at CIMAP (Khanuja et al., 2001)

Demethylation of 3', 4&#x2032;-dimethoxy or 3&#x2032;, 4&#x2032;, 5&#x2032;-trimethoxy benzoic ester of a phenol is carried out in the presence of an excess of aluminum halide in an organic solvent to get 4&#x2032;-Hydroxy, 3&#x2032;-methoxy or 4&#x2032; hydroxy, 3&#x2032;, 5&#x2032;-dimethoxy benzoic acid ester of a phenol. The reaction is also applicable to 3&#x2032;, 4&#x2032;, 5&#x2032;-trimethoxy diaryl ketone and some natural products like reserpine.
