A method for preventing damage in a bearing of a generator of an electrical power system having a power conversion assembly with a first converter coupled to a second converter, and the power conversion assembly electrically coupled to the generator. Further, the method includes monitoring a phase current and voltage of the first converter. The method also includes calculating a common mode power using the phase current and the voltage of the first converter. Moreover, the method includes comparing the common mode power to a predefined power threshold. The method also includes determining whether the common mode power is indicative of degradation in at least one of a bearing insulation or a ground brush based on the comparison of the common mode power to the predefined power threshold.

A method and system for controlling a hybrid power generation plant by receiving from a grid a data from among a power demand, a peak hour, a frequency, a ramp, a reactive power, or a voltage. A power production of power sources in the plant is varied depending on the received data and a characteristic of each of the power sources. The varying increases an active power produced by the plant while maintaining reactive power at a constant level by increasing a real power of a first power source while decreasing a reactive power produced by the first power source and simultaneously increasing a reactive power produced by a second power source without increasing a real power produced by the second power source. The first power source is a different type of power source from the second power source.

A method for controlling an active harmonic filter of an inverter-based resource includes receiving, via a maximum compensation tracker module, a grid feedback signal, determining, via the maximum compensation tracker module, a phase shift signal based, at least in part, on the grid feedback signal, applying, via the maximum compensation tracker module, a phase shift offset signal to the phase shift signal to obtain a modified phase shift signal, determining, via the maximum compensation tracker module, a voltage reference signal for the active harmonic filter based, at least in part, on the grid feedback signal and the modified phase shift signal; and controlling, via the maximum compensation tracker module, the active harmonic filter using the voltage reference signal, wherein the phase shift offset signal ensures that the active harmonic filter injects a current substantially out of phase of a targeted harmonic.

System and method for controlling an active harmonic filter in an inverter-based resource

The system and method described herein provide grid-forming control of a power generating asset having a double-fed generator connected to a power grid. Accordingly, a stator-frequency error is determined for the generator. The components of the stator frequency error are identified as a torsional component corresponding to a drivetrain torsional vibration frequency and a stator component. Based on the stator component, a power output requirement for the generator is determined. This power output requirement is combined with the damping power command to develop a consolidated power requirement for the generator. Based on the consolidated power requirement, at least one control command for the generator is determined and an operating state of the generator is altered.

System and methods to address drive train damper oscillations in a grid forming power generating asset

A method and associated system provide grid-forming mode (GFM) control of an inverter-based renewable energy source having an asynchronous machine connected to a power grid. The method includes deriving a power error signal (P) between a real power output (P) from the renewable energy source and a power reference (P) representing a desired power output of the renewable energy source. With an inertial power regulator, a phase shift angle (δ) is generated from the power error signal (P) to provide virtual synchronous machine (VSM) control functionality to the GFM control of the renewable energy source. A power angle compensation (Δδ) is applied to the phase shift angle (δ) from the inertial power regulator to dampen power oscillations and load fluctuations during transient power events.

System and method for operating a renewable energy source in grid-forming mode (GFM) as a virtual synchronous machine (VSM) with damper winding emulation

A method of operating a wind converter is provided. The method includes receiving a plurality of forecasted datasets. The forecasted datasets include event signals for the wind converter during fast transient operating conditions (OCs) and operational data for the wind converter having a low sampling rate. The method further includes estimating a converter life consumption during normal OCs and a converter life consumption during the fast transient OCs. Further, the method includes computing a total converter life consumption of the wind converter. Moreover, the method includes predicting, using a remaining useful life (RUL) prediction module, an RUL for the wind converter based on the total converter life consumption. The method further includes adjusting operation of the wind converter by adjusting operating variables of the wind converter.

Systems and methods for controlling wind converters

A hybrid power plant including a plurality of power sources and controllers, a hybrid plant controller, and a computing system. The controllers operate the power sources according to operating set points. The hybrid plant controller transmits the operating set points to the controllers. The computing system is coupled to the hybrid plant controller and receives a first set of input parameters from a first subscriber, and carries out a first level of services to which the first subscriber subscribes to determine operating parameters for the first subscriber. The computing system receives a second set of input parameters from a second subscriber and carries out a second level of services to which the second subscriber subscribes to determine operating parameters for the second subscriber. The computing system then computes the operating set points based on aggregate operating parameters for the first and second subscribers.

A method for operating a multi-level bridge power converter includes arranging a plurality of switching devices including at least four inner switching devices and at least two outer switching devices in an active neutral point clamped topology. The method also includes determining whether any of the switching devices is experiencing a failure condition by implementing a failure detection algorithm. The failure detection algorithm includes generating a blocking state logic signal by comparing a switching device voltage and a threshold reference voltage for each of the switching devices, determining an expected voltage blocking state for each of the switching devices based on gate drive signals of the switching devices and an output current direction, and detecting whether a failure condition is present in any of the switching devices based on the blocking state logic signals and the expected voltage blocking states of the switching devices.

A method for operating a generator of a wind turbine includes generating, via a controller, a time series of a plurality of operating signals of the generator. The method also includes applying at least one algorithm to the time series of the plurality of operating signals of the generator to generate a processed time series of the of the plurality of operating signals of the generator. Moreover, the method includes identifying, via the controller, patterns in the processed time series of the plurality of operating signals of the generator to identify one or more of at least one slip event occurring in the slip coupling or a surface health of the slip coupling. Further, the method includes implementing, via the controller, a control action when the at least one slip event occurring in the slip coupling is identified or the surface health of the slip coupling is indicative of degradation in the slip coupling.
