A selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system is disclosed. The SCR system may include a mixing tube with a mixing tube inlet; a diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) injector proximate to the mixing tube inlet; and a flow control device proximate to the mixing tube inlet, wherein the flow control device is positioned within the mixing tube or affixed to the mixing tube inlet, and wherein the flow control device includes a plurality of vanes arranged around a center of the flow control device.

Rotational exhaust flow control for diesel exhaust fluid injection

A reductant impingement device includes a proximal end having an impingement pin with a convex surface; and a distal end having a body concentric with a longitudinal axis of the impingement pin. The distal end includes a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface. A plurality of inner channels connects the first surface and the second surface, and a plurality of outer channels connects the first surface and the second surface, where the plurality of inner channels are disposed in a circular array at a first radial distance from a longitudinal axis of the impingement pin, and the plurality of outer channels are disposed in a circular array at a second distance from the longitudinal axis of the impingement pin.

Channeled reductant mixing device

An exhaust aftertreatment system includes a housing including first and second axial ends. An exhaust inlet is disposed adjacent the first axial end. An exhaust outlet is disposed adjacent the second axial end. A catalytic converter is disposed between the first and second axial ends. A diffuser is disposed inside the housing between the first axial end and the catalytic converter. The diffuser includes a shell in communication with the exhaust inlet. The shell includes proximal and distal portions and a front side facing the catalytic converter. The proximal and distal portions are substantially equal in frontal area. The proximal portion is adjacent the exhaust inlet and includes a first plurality of front side openings totaling a first open area and the distal portion includes a second plurality of front side openings totaling a second open area. The first open area is about 1.8-2.2 times the second.

Inlet diffuser for exhaust aftertreatment system

A mixer is disclosed for use in a reductant dosing system. The mixer may have an impingement floor located within an intended fluid injection path and generally parallel with a flow direction through the mixer. The mixer may also have a first side wall connected along a lengthwise edge of the impingement floor, a second side wall connected along an opposing lengthwise edge of the impingement floor, and a plurality of shelves extending between the first and second side walls. The plurality of shelves each may include a plurality of vanes that promote mixing of an injected fluid. One or more of the plurality of shelves may extend different distances upstream opposite the flow direction.

Reductant dosing system having staggered injectors

Accurate measurement of exhaust gas compounds is necessary for correct operation of exhaust treatment systems, such as Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) units used in diesel engines. However, accurate sensor readings assume an even distribution of compounds in an exhaust stream in order to use a sampled measurement to be extrapolated to the compound concentrations in the full stream. A structure placed in an exhaust passage downstream of an SCR reaction unit causes turbulence in the exhaust gas while developing a minimal backpressure. This turbulence helps create a more uniform distribution of compounds in the exhaust. As a result, an exhaust gas sensor gives more accurate readings even when the sensor is placed in relatively close proximity to an output of the SCR system.
