A multi-chip MIMO radar system includes a plurality of transmitters and a plurality of receivers. Each of the pluralities of transmitters and receivers are arranged across a plurality of circuit chips. The multi-chip MIMO radar system includes a central processor configured to receive data from the plurality of circuit chips. The plurality of circuit chips generates sets of selected range, Doppler, and virtual receiver data. The central processor is operable to process the sets of selected range, Doppler, and virtual receiver data to produce selected range detection and angular resolvability of targets.

Method and system for multi-chip operation of radar systems

A distributed radar system, apparatus, architecture, and method is provided for coherently combining physically distributed radars to jointly produce target scene information in a coherent fashion without sharing a common local oscillator (LO) reference by configuring a first (slave) radar to apply fast and slow time processing steps to target returns generated from a second (master) radar, to compute an estimated frequency offset and an estimated phase offset between the first and second radars based on information derived from the fast and slow time processing steps, and to apply the estimated frequency offset and estimated phase offset to generate a bi-static virtual array aperture at the first radar that is coherent in frequency and phase with a mono-static virtual array aperture generated at the second radar, thereby achieving better sensitivity, finer angular resolution, and low false detection rate.

A device for a radar sensor is disclosed, the device comprising: transmission circuitry configured to generate transmission signals with a linear frequency chirp modulation in a predetermined frequency band for output to a radar antenna; reception circuitry configured to receive reflection signals corresponding to reflection of the transmitted radar signals from one or more physical objects; and control circuitry configured to select a frequency range within said predetermined frequency band and/or a timing pattern for said transmission signals; wherein said device is configured to: receive a further signal from a further radar sensor; determine, from said further signal, a frequency range and/or timing pattern in use by said further radar sensor for transmission of further transmission signals; and select a frequency range within said predetermined frequency band and/or a timing pattern for said transmission signals which does not conflict with the frequency range and/or timing pattern of said further transmission signals.

Embodiments are provided for a radar system including: an N number of transmit antennas; and an N number of phase shift keying (PSK) coders, each assigned a respective optimized transmitter code of a set of optimized transmitter codes, each optimized transmitter code of the set comprises a sequence of K code chips, each optimized transmitter code of the set is orthogonal to every other optimized transmitter code of the set, spectral analysis of a cross-correlation between any two optimized transmitter codes results in sidelobes no greater than a predetermined detection threshold, each PSK coder encodes K ranging waveform blocks according to the sequence of K code chips of the respective optimized transmitter code and produces a respective optimized coded sequence, and each of the N transmit antennas outputs the respective optimized coded sequence at the same time.
