A method of generating power by passing a dimethyl ether-containing fuel to a dry low NO,combustor of a fired turbine-combustor in the presence of an oxygen-containing gas for combustion in the combustor to form flue gas, and then passing the flue gas to the turbine to generate power, wherein the fuel comprises a mixture of dimethyl ether, at least one alcohol and, optionally, a component selected from the group consisting of water and C,-C,alkanes. The fuel composition used in the inventive method permits a safe and highly efficient operation of a dry low NO,combustion system, while at the same time, minimizing the generation of NO,and carbon monoxide emissions.

Method of generating power in a dry low NOx combustion system

A diesel fuel composition comprising from about 70 to about 95 weight percent of dimethyl ether, up to about 20 weight percent of methanol, and from about 0.1 to about 20 weight percent of water is disclosed.

Diesel fuel composition

A power generating method that includes the steps of burning a reformed fuel in the presence of air in a combustor of a gas turbine to generate a hot exhaust gas is disclosed. The hot exhaust gas is then passed through a turbine section of the gas turbine to generate power and, thereafter, the hot exhaust gas is passed through a heat recovery system where the hot exhaust gas is successively cooled as it passes through a series of heat exchangers. Heat exchangers comprising the heat recovery system include combustion air pre-heater(s); a thermochemical recuperator (or reformer), wherein hot exhaust gas provides the endothermic heat of reaction necessary to reform a raw fuel/steam mixture to the combustible, reformed fuel that is eventually burned in the combustor; and one or more water/steam heaters which supply steam to a low-pressure, condensing steam turbine of a bottoming Rankine cycle to generate additional power. A cooled exhaust gas exits the heat recovery system and, optionally, may be sent to scrubbers and/or other unit operations for further processing, such as removal of harmful toxins, before being vented to the atmosphere.

Method of generating power using an advanced thermal recuperation cycle

The invention relates to high energy, oxygenated fuel compositions suitable for use in compression ignition internal combustion engines which fuel compositions contain a synergistic combination of dimethyl ether, methanol, and water, the combination providing a single liquid phase with good ignition characteristics. More particularly fuels comprising from about 72 to about 95 weight percent of dimethyl ether, from about 0.1 to about 20 weight percent of methanol, and from about 0.1 to about 20 weight percent of water are disclosed.

Fuels for diesel engines

Emissions of nitrogen oxides in exhaust from gas turbine systems are reduced, in accordance with the invention, by introducing, into the combustor, a supplementary gaseous stream comprising dihydrogen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, and a stream of gaseous fuel and/or mixtures thereof, with a source of dioxygen to form a combustible gaseous mixture; combusting the mixture to produce heat and a combustion product stream; and driving a turbine with the combustion product stream to produce an exhaust stream and to generate mechanical power. Supplementary gaseous streams are, advantageously, formed by a process for hydroshifting dimethyl ether, i.e. formed by a process which comprises passing a feed stream which includes dimethyl ether and steam to a hydroshifting, reaction zone including an essentially alkali metal-free catalytic composition substantially composed of copper or nickel in elemental form. This process produces a hydroshifted product stream which is, advantageously, relatively rich in dihydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide.

Process for abatement of nitrogen oxides in exhaust from gas turbine

A method is described for operating a spark ignition internal combustion engine utilizing an improved composition containing dimethyl ether and propane as fuel. An engine incorporating the invention produces a lesser amount of certain atmospheric pollutants, such as carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons, as compared to the amount of pollutants produced when the engine is operated at identical conditions with propane as fuel. Also described is an improved fuel composition which exhibits a lower vapor pressure than, for example, propane and, therefore, is relatively easier to liquefy and transport.

Process and fuel for spark ignition engines

A process for hydroshifting dimethyl ether is described which comprises passing a feed stream which includes dimethyl ether and steam to a hydroshifting reaction zone including an essentially alkali metal-free catalytic composition substantially composed of copper or nickel in elemental form. The process produces a hydroshifted product stream which is relatively rich in hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. The feed stream can be transported relatively easily in liquid form at comparatively low pressures. The hydroshifting reaction zone can include a hydrolysis reaction zone and a water-gas shift reaction zone. The hydrolyzed product and the water-gas shift product can be recovered to obtain hydrogen and carbon dioxide, respectively. Additionally, the hydroshifted product stream can be blended with an oxidizing stream and combusted to drive a turbine in order to generate mechanical energy.

Process for hydroshifting dimethyl ether

A coal liquefaction process employing a first stage liquefaction step catalyzed by a soluble molybdenum-containing organophosphorodithioate catalyst is disclosed. In some embodiments, two consecutive liquefaction steps employ a molybdenum-containing organophosphorodithioate catalyst operating at a relatively high liquefaction temperature. In other embodiments, a second liquefaction process step operating at a relatively low temperature employs a hydrocracking catalyst to upgrade materials obtained from the first soluble catalyst liquefaction step. In some embodiments, an interstage gas separator removes gases such as carbon dioxide produced in the first liquefaction step from a partially liquefied mixture prior to further liquefying the mixture in the second liquefaction step.

A composition consisting essentially of a carbonaceous solid containing at least one carboxyl group is heated with subcritical liquid water at decarboxylation conditions including a temperature of at least about 300.degree. F. to substantially decarboxylate the solid, thereby producing a stream comprising a decarboxylated solid and water. The water is separated from the decarboxylated solid prior to liquefying the solid.
