The invention includes a method and apparatus for scheduling multicast transmissions in a wireless network by selecting one of a plurality of multicast groups of a cellular region that is permitted to transmit information during a current timeslot. The invention includes a method and apparatus for providing multimedia content to a plurality of wireless terminals. The method includes transcoding an original media stream to form at least one companion media stream, each media stream having a different data rate, and advertising each media stream to each of the plurality of wireless terminals, each wireless terminal having an associated channel condition. The original media stream and at least one companion media stream are each adapted for being selected by each of the wireless terminals. The invention includes a method and apparatus for providing multimedia content. The method includes receiving, at a network element having a first buffer, a data stream conveying a media clip having an associated media bit rate, the media clip intended for transmission toward a wireless terminal having a second buffer, and transmitting the data stream toward the wireless terminal at a media transmission rate determined according to a data rate supported by a radio access network over which the data stream is transmitted toward the wireless terminal. A virtual network is configured in a communication system in such a manner that the virtual network is not required to have associated therewith any particular physical home location, or more generally any dedicated arrangement of physical network infrastructure elements. The communication system includes a communication network, such as a wireless network or the Internet, connectable to one or more user communication elements. Information is received from a given one of the communication elements indicating association of the given communication element with a particular virtual network, and responsive to the received information the virtual network is configured to include the given communication element. A General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) Accessed Extended Mobile Internet Protocol (EMIP) [G-EMIP] network is provided for wireless mobile device access to external packet data networks. Domains are defined to incorporate a subnet of standard GPRS and EMIP network entities accessed through a Domain Router. Packet access at the radio interface is provided using the base station portion of a GPRS network. Wireless link specific processing is relegated to this potion of the G-EMIP network. EMIP is utilized as a backbone network to provide mobility and service management and interconnection to external networks. A GPRS-IP Interworking entity (GII) interworks IP and GPRS protocols between GPRS and IP addressable network entities (i.e., translates messages of each protocol to corresponding messages of the other protocol). Mobility-related functionality is handled at the IP (network) layer. Mobile IP is used to support the macro-mobility and Handoff-Aware Wireless Access Internet Infrastructure (HAWAII) is used to support micro-mobility and paging. The Domain Router provides packet service management and interacts with a Home Location Register/Authentication Center, which provides GRPS registration, authentication and encryption.

In a multicast network, a method is employed for selecting a low cost multicast conference tree subject to an end-to-end delay constraint for transmissions between any two nodes in the tree that terminate conference participants. The method employs a constrained minimum cost Steiner tree selection technique that integrates facilities costs and a delay constraint into a single objective function to be minimized as the tree is incrementally configured. The method also incorporates a unique path delay metric (delta diameter) that indicates the effect on end-to-end delay resulting from the incremental addition of a next node to the Steiner tree.

A method for reconnecting calls affected by a loss of synchronization comprises detecting disconnect of a call and initiating a time-out sequence during which reconnection attempts are performed. The reconnection time-out sequence may be incremented a predetermined number of times before reconnection attempts are terminated and the call is released. Further, a mobile switching center and a serving base station may selectively determine whether reconnection attempts are to be made. Advantageously, resources associated with a call affected by a loss of synchronization are held for a predetermined time. If reconnection is successful, the held resources are bridged to new air traffic channels resulting in enhanced network efficiency.
