An air turbine starter for starting an engine includes a housing, and a flow path communicating a flow of gas therethrough; a turbine member; a clutch; and a decoupler device at least partially housed within the output member of the clutch. The decoupler device includes a first shaft portion coupled to and rotating with the output member and a second shaft portion coupled to and rotating with the engine. The first and second shaft portions are axially aligned and configured to engage each another for rotation in a first direction and to separate from each other in a second direction to decouple the output member of the clutch from the engine. The starter further includes a bearing between the inner surface of the output member and the second shaft portion for reducing friction between the second shaft portion and the inner surface of the output member when the first and second shaft portions are decoupled.

A seal pressure vent system for a waterjet propulsion apparatus including a water intake section and a pumping unit. The pumping unit is designed such that in operation the seal pressure vent system provides a fluidic path for the flow of high pressure water away from a lip seal assembly toward a near ambient pressure region. The seal vent system includes a plurality of fluid passageways formed in a stator structure in conjunction with a water barrier ring, a tail cone including an extended flange, or a modified stator web structure.

A preload system for bearings in a waterjet propulsion apparatus, the apparatus including a water intake section and a pumping unit including a bearing cartridge. The bearing cartridge is designed such that during operation a preload system provides tailoring between radial and axial thermal growths of a plurality of bearing components that comprise the bearing cartridge and such that an initial ambient temperature preload condition can be maintained or reduced during normal water mode operation conditions. The preload system includes a plurality of spacers that when positioned relative to the bearing components of the bearing cartridge prevent relative motion between the bearing components during land mode operation and maintain or reduce the initial ambient room temperature preload condition during normal water mode operation.

Disclosed herein is a rotating radial scoop used to move fluid from a larger radius to a smaller radius, comprising a blade at least partially circumscribing a central axis from an outer radius of the scoop to an capture radius of the scoop, wherein the inner surface of the blade is curved. A scoop having a blade with a curved inner surface extending from the scoop outer radius to a capture radius is disclosed. A turbine engine comprising the scoop, along with a method of providing a fluid to a bearing utilizing the scoop is also disclosed.

A rolling element bearing anti-cavitation cage is a circular ring with a plurality of cage pockets at predetermined intervals along a circumference of the circular ring. Each of the cage pockets has at least one groove on the leading edge of the cage pocket and at least groove on the trailing edge of the cage pocket. An assembled rolling element bearing is also provided in which the rolling element bearing anti-cavitation cage has rolling elements within the cage pockets and in concentrically disposed between inner and outer races. A method for preventing cavitation during the operation of an assembled rolling element bearing using the cage is also provided.

A ceramic finger seal for use between a housing and a combustor liner to inhibit air passage therebetween and for use in fluid sealing between a rotating shaft and a housing circumscribing the rotating shaft. The ceramic finger seal has at least two annular diaphragm members constructed of two or more diaphragm segments bonded end to end by ceramic cement or other high temperature joining compounds. The diaphragm members may be partitioned into a generally continuous inner diameter portion and a segmented outer diameter portion or the reverse thereof. The segmented portion includes finger elements spaced uniformly apart forming gaps therebetween and extend radially outward or inward terminating in a foot portion. The rolled edge on the finger is formed by laser cutting to prevent gouging of the combustor liner surface.
