Command packets for a personal video recorder that provides for a transport stream (TS) that contains data and also includes a transport packet (TP)/TS formatted command packets. The TP/TS formatted command packet may be communicated between any number of devices, including multiple chips, multiple boards, and multiple processors. A decoder is able to decode the TP/TS formatted command packet and to perform the appropriate operation on data portions of the TS. When a TS is provided to a device not having the capability to perform the proper decoding of the TP/TS formatted command packet, that particular packet may be deemed as being unidentified (or unknown) adaptation field data. Alternatively, the packet may be identified as being corrupted data and/or irrelevant data.

Presented herein are systems, methods, and apparatus for improving performance of video decoders during rewind and fast forward operation. Video decoder performance is improved by avoiding repetitive decoding of prediction pictures. When a decoded prediction picture is stored in a frame buffer, techniques are presented for decoding multiple pictures in the rewind order which are dependent thereon, displaying the picture directly from the frame buffer, and setting one type of prediction picture as another type of prediction picture.

A system, method, and apparatus for reducing the video decoder processing requirements are presented herein. During a rewind operation, a reference picture for a group of pictures is decoded and stored into a reference frame buffer. By storing a reference picture for the group, the reference picture need not be decoded to display each picture in the group during the rewind operation.

Command packet system and method supporting improved trick mode performance in video decoding systems

A system, method, and apparatus for providing display parameters from the decode process to the display process are presented herein. The decode process receives images which are encoded according to a predetermined standard. Included with the encoded images are parameters which facilitate the decode and display processes. The decode process decodes the encoded images as well as the parameters and stores each image in a separate image buffer. Additionally, the decode process stores the parameters which facilitate the display process in a buffer descriptor structure associated with the image buffer. The display process uses the parameters stored in the buffer descriptor structure during the display process.

Presented herein is a method and system for reducing memory requirements in audio signal processing by de-interleaving audio information with at least two static buffers and a dynamic buffer. The method may include writing interleaved audio information to a first static memory device. The method may also include de-interleaving the audio information and writing de-interleaved audio information to a second static memory device. The method may also include writing de-interleaved audio information to a dynamic memory device from the second static memory device and overwriting interleaved audio information with new interleaved audio information in the first static memory device. The method may also include overwriting interleaved audio information in the first static memory device with de-interleaved audio information from the dynamic memory device and decoding the audio information.

Presented herein are systems and methods for computing the product of a constant and a mixed number power of two. A circuit comprises a first register, a second register, a memory, a third register, and a multiplier circuit. The first register stores the constant. The second register stores the integer portion and the fraction portion. The memory stores a plurality of values, each of said plurality of values corresponding to a particular one of a corresponding plurality of fractions, wherein each one of said plurality of values is two to the exponential fraction corresponding to the one of said plurality of values. The third register stores a particular one of the plurality of values, said particular one of the plurality of values corresponding to the fraction portion. The multiplier circuit multiplies the contents of the third register by the contents of the first register, thereby resulting in a product. The product is shifted a certain number of times, the certain number of times equal to the integer portion.

A system, method, and apparatus for reducing the video decoder processing requirements for rewinding a HITS stream are presented herein. During rewind of a HITS stream, the video decoder builds a clean reference picture. The clean reference picture is built by decoding each of the P-pictures in the EP-EP segment. However, because the P-pictures are not displayed, the decoder does not decode the portion of the P-picture below the last intracoded slice. The decoder can build the clean reference picture without decoding the portions of the P-pictures below the last intracoded slice because the subsequent pictures do not use the said portions for prediction.
