Disclosed herein are electrolytes and electrochemical devices. The electrochemical devices comprise cathodes that include nickel-rich layered lithium transition metal oxides, lithium-rich layered transition-metal oxides, lithium manganese-based spinel oxides, lithium polyanion-based compounds, and combinations thereof. The electrolytes include a lithium imide salt, an aprotic acyclic carbonate solvent, and an additive, wherein the additive comprises a metal salt, an aprotic solvent, or a combination thereof. The electrolyte can be stable at a voltage of 4.3 V or above vs. Li/Li+.

A method of preparing a composite positive electrode active material for a lithium secondary battery includes surface-treating a nickel-based active material using carbon dioxide to form a lithium carbonate layer on the surface of the nickel-based active material, mixing the nickel-based active material having the lithium carbonate layer on the surface thereof with a metal precursor including at least one metal selected from cobalt (Co), aluminum (Al), magnesium (Mg), and gallium (Ga) to prepare a mixture, and heat-treating the mixture. Described herein are low or no-cobalt materials useful as electrode active materials in a cathode for lithium or lithium-ion batteries. For example, compositions of matter are described herein, such as electrode active materials that can be incorporated into an electrode, such as a cathode. The disclosed electrode active materials exhibit high specific energy and voltage, and can also exhibit high rate capability and/or long operational lifetime.

It further relates to an anode material with the general formula MoSb&#x2014;C, where &#x2014;C forms a matrix containing MoSb. The disclosure also relates to an anode material with the general formula MSb-M&#x2032;C&#x2014;C, where M and M&#x2032; are metals and M&#x2032;C&#x2014;C forms a matrix containing MSb. Other embodiments of this disclosure relate to anodes or rechargeable batteries containing these materials as well as methods of making these materials using ball-milling techniques and furnace heating.

Anode materials for lithium-ion batteries

In one embodiment, the present disclosure relates to a rechargeable Li&#x2014;S battery including a cathode including a firbrous carbon material, a catholyte including a polysulfide, and an anode. In another embodiment, the present disclosure relates to a charged or partially charged rechargeable Li&#x2014;S battery including a cathode including a fibrous carbon material and amorphous microparticles of elemental sulfur, a catholyte including high-order polysulfides having a general formula of LiS, wherein n is at least eight, and an anode. In another embodiment, the present disclosure relates to a discharged or partially discharged rechargeable Li&#x2014;S battery including a cathode including a fibrous carbon material and amorphous microparticles of LiS, a catholyte including a negligible amount of polysulfides, and an anode.

Lithium/dissolved polysulfide rechargeable lithium&#x2014;sulfur batteries and methods of making the same

The disclosure relates to an anode material for a sodium-ion battery having the general formula AO&#x2014;C or AC&#x2014;C, where A is aluminum (Al), magnesium (Mg), titanium (Ti), vanadium (V), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), zirconium (Zr), molybdenum (Mo), tungsten (W), niobium (Nb), tantalum (Ta), silicon (Si), or any combinations thereof. The anode material also contains an electrochemically active nanoparticles within the matrix. The nanoparticle may react with sodium ion (Na) when placed in the anode of a sodium-ion battery. In more specific embodiments, the anode material may have the general formula MSb-M'O&#x2014;C, Sb-MO&#x2014;C, MSn-M&#x2032;C&#x2014;C, or Sn-MC&#x2014;C. The disclosure also relates to rechargeable sodium-ion batteries containing these materials and methods of making these materials.

Nanocomposite anode materials for sodium-ion batteries

The present disclosure relates to an electrochemical cell including an anode, a sulfur-containing cathode, a lithium-ion-containing electrolyte, and a porous carbon interlayer disposed between the anode and the cathode. The interlayer may be permeable to the electrolyte. The interlayer may be formed from a multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) or a microporous carbon paper (MCP).

Porous carbon interlayer for lithium-sulfur battery

The present disclosure includes a sulfur-carbon nanotube composite comprising a sheet of carbon nanotubes and sulfur nucleated upon the carbon nanotubes, and methods for synthesizing the same. In some embodiments, the sulfur-carbon composite may further be binder-free and include a sheet of carbon nanotubes, rendering a binder and a current collector unnecessary. In other embodiments of the present disclosure, a cathode comprising the sulfur-carbon nanotube composite is disclosed. The present invention includes compositions and methods of making cation-substituted and fluorine-substituted spinel cathode compositions by firing a LiMnLiMOoxide with NHHFat low temperatures of between about 300 and 700&#xb0; C. for 2 to 8 hours and a &#x3b7; of more than 0 and less than about 0.50, mixed two-phase compositions consisting of a spinel cathode and a layered oxide cathode, and coupling them with unmodified or surface modified graphite anodes in lithium ion cells.
