A system includes a point of load (POL) module. The POL module includes a point of load printed circuit board. At least one inductor is mounted to the point of load printed circuit board. The POL module includes a power network. The POL module is configured to be surface mounted. The system further includes a heat sink including a first leg configured to be surface mounted adjacent the point of load printed circuit board, a second leg configured to be surface mounted adjacent the point of load printed circuit board opposite the first leg, and a cap portion connecting the first leg to the second leg. The heat sink is sized and shaped to encompass the POL module and configured to connect to the power network. The power network may be a PGND network.

Point of load module and heatsink therefor

A multi-phase modular power delivery system, comprising a master module integrated with a main circuit board. A controller installed on the master module, the controller configured to receive an input voltage from the main circuit board and provide a variety of voltage levels to the master module for internal power and internal operation based on the received input voltage, provide power to a first load connected to the main circuit board using a first smart power stage installed on the master module, and provide power to a second load connected to the main circuit board using a second smart power stage, wherein the second smart power stage is installed on a satellite module.

Systems and methods for coordinating power delivery in a modular multi-phase power delivery system

Illustrative embodiments of hybrid transformers, power supplies, and methods relating to the same are disclosed. In at least one embodiment, a hybrid transformer includes first and second wire coils arranged on opposing surfaces of a printed circuit board (PCB), a core extending through the PCB, wherein the first and second coils are each wound around the core, and at least one header electrically coupling one of the first and second wire coils to the PCB.

Hybrid transformers for power supplies

A system including a point of load converter module (POL). The POL module includes a point of load printed circuit board. At least one inductor is mounted to the point of load printed circuit board. The POL module includes a power network. The point of load converter module is configured to be surface mounted. The system includes a heat sink including a first leg configured to be surface mounted adjacent the point of load printed circuit board, a second leg configured to be surface mounted adjacent the point of load printed circuit board opposite the first leg, and a cap portion connecting the first leg to the second leg. The heat sink is sized and shaped to encompass the POL and configured to connect to the power network. The power network may be a PGND network.

In one aspect, a PCB is provided. The PCB includes at least one insulating layer, a blind slot, and at least one via. The at least on insulating layer includes a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface. The blind slot is plated and formed in the at least one insulating layer, where the blind slot partially extends from the first surface to the second surface, and where the blind slot includes a conductive plating bonded along a major surface of the blind slot. The at least one via is electrically conductive and filled, where the at least one via is coupled with and extends between the conductive plating of the blind slot and the second surface of the at least one insulating layer.

Printed circuit boards with plated blind slots for improved vertical electrical and/or thermal connections

A printed circuit board (PCB) assembly is provided. The PCB assembly comprises a printed wiring board (PWB) and one or more electrical components mounted thereon. The PWB comprises a plurality of layers including conductive layers and insulative layers, where one or more of the insulative layers is a prepreg layer that is halogen-free; one or more slotted portions on a surface of the PWB, which are indented into the PWB; and one or more pads disposed on the surface of the PWB, which are paired with the one or more slotted portions. Each of the one or more electrical components is mounted on the surface of the PWB through a pair of a slotted portion and a pad.

Printed circuit board layout

A power converter is provided. The power converter includes an input side having a first input winding and a second input winding coupled in electrical series to the first input winding. The power converter also includes an output side having a first output winding and a second output winding coupled in electrical parallel to the first output winding.

Single-stage DC-DC power converter

A power supply circuit includes a printed circuit board (PCB), and a transformer coupled to the PCB. The power supply circuit also includes a first inductor assembly coupled to the PCB and electrically connected to the transformer, and a second inductor assembly coupled to the PCB and electrically connected to the transformer. The first inductor assembly has an inner edge and an opposite outer edge, and the second inductor assembly has an inner edge and an opposite outer edge. The inner edge of the second inductor assembly is spaced apart from the inner edge of the first inductor assembly by a gap. The power supply circuit also includes a first magnetic shunt coupled to the outer edge of the first inductor assembly, and a second magnetic shunt coupled to the outer edge of the second inductor assembly.

Inductively balanced power supply circuit and method of manufacture

An integrated magnetic assembly includes a magnetic core, an input winding inductively coupled to the magnetic core, a first output winding inductively coupled to the magnetic core, and a second output winding inductively coupled to the magnetic core. The magnetic core includes first and second non-winding legs, and first and second winding legs. The first and second non-winding legs are spaced apart from one another, and the magnetic core defines an opening between the first and second non-winding legs. The input winding extends through the opening between the first and second non-winding legs, and is wound around each of the first and second winding legs. The first output winding is wound around the first winding leg. The second output winding is wound around the second winding leg.

Integrated magnetic assemblies and methods of assembling same

The invention relates to a transformer construction comprising a plurality of transformer cores configured to share magnetic flux paths and, as a result, at least one of the cores comprises a post and an associated sidewall having an effective cross-sectional area which is less than that of the post. Such a construction may be employed in a power conditioning unit, for example, for a photovoltaic module, which is configured to operate the cores out of phase from each other. Also described is a transformer winding comprising a longitudinal spine having a first turn emanating from a first portion of the spine in a first transverse direction and a second turn emanating from a second portion of the spine in a second transverse direction, wherein the second transverse direction is opposite to the first transverse direction.

Transformer construction

An integrated inductor assembly is provided. The integrated inductor assembly includes a magnetic core, a first inductor, and a second inductor. The magnetic core has a first side, an opposing second side, and an opening defined within the magnetic core. The opening extends into the magnetic core from at least one of the first side and the second side. The first inductor includes a first conductive winding inductively coupled to the magnetic core. The first conductive winding includes a first shorting segment positioned within the opening. The second inductor includes a second conductive winding inductively coupled to the magnetic core. The second conductive winding includes a second shorting segment positioned within the opening. The first and second inductors are configurable to operate independently of one another.

Integrated inductor assemblies and methods of assembling same

A conductive cable for reducing the power losses in components, such as inductors and transformers. The conductive cable includes multiple strands that each include an inner conductor and an outer insulating layer. The conductive cable includes strands of multiple cross-sectional areas (multiple gauges), such that the power losses associated with the skin effect may be reduced. The cross-sectional areas of the strands of the conductive cable may be selected dependent upon the frequency content of the current that they are intended to carry. In the case of a PFC boost converter, the various cross-sectional areas of the strands may be selected to carry the harmonics of and AC power source, as well as higher frequency current caused by a switch associated with the PFC boost converter.

Optimized litz wire

An inductive element including a magnetic core with a section received in a central opening defined in each of the layers in a multilayer circuit board. A primary winding, an auxiliary winding, and a secondary winding are each realized in conductive coils located on a plurality of layers in the circuit board. The secondary winding is separated from the other windings by a relatively-thick dielectric layer. Other dielectric layers separate each of the layers with the coils. EMI shields are provided on other layers. The coils are located in a central region of each layer so as to provide an adequate safety margin from the side edges of the inductive element.
