The systems and methods provided herein determine at least one first file system path related to a specific software package. A second file system path associated with a computing process running on the computer system is determined, and use of the specific software package on the computer system is detected based on comparing the first file system path with the second file system path. Thus, the present techniques determine the installation director(ies) of the application(s) and then compare active processes to determine whether an application is in use or is only installed.

Self-learning automated techniques for detecting the usage of software packages

A mechanism is provided for controlling execution of a computer program. An execution of unallowed software may be prohibited. Structural elements of a graphical user interface of the computer program are detected. The detected structural elements are compared with a stored signature, each signature comprising structural elements of a graphical user interface of allowed computer programs. Upon not finding a matching signature among the stored signatures when comparing, further executing of the computer program is inhibited.

Detection of forbidden software through analysis of GUI components

A method for software discovery may be provided. The method may comprise scanning an shared resource mounted to an endpoint device for identifying installed software on the shared resource for the endpoint device, monitoring a read access to such identified installed software by the endpoint device using a monitoring agent, and marking the installed software as used on the shared resource by the endpoint device using a software asset management unit. Additionally, the method may comprise recording a last time use of the installed software by the endpoint device, and marking the installed software as uninstalled on the endpoint device after a predetermined time after the last time use.

Software discovery for software on shared file systems

Software asset management (SAM) for virtual environments performing the following operations: (i) collecting a set of virtual machine (VM) descriptor(s) sets, where each VM descriptor(s) set corresponds to one of the following: a VM appliance or a sealed VM image; (ii) for each VM descriptor(s) set of the set of VM descriptor(s) set(s), determining whether there is a match to an entry in a VM descriptor set/software application mapping data set; and (iii) for each VM descriptor(s) set of the set of VM descriptor(s) set(s), on condition that there is a match, determining an identity of a set of software application(s) in the VM appliance or sealed VM image corresponding to the VM descriptor(s) set based on the respectively matching entry in the VM descriptor/software mapping data set.
