An apparatus for a wireless network access device includes a first communication interface for wirelessly communicating with a wireless communication device. The apparatus includes a second communication interface for communicating with a network gateway device. The apparatus includes a control module configured to receive a first request for wireless uplink resources from the wireless communication device via the first communication interface. The control module is configured to provide a second request for wired uplink resources to the gateway device via the second communication interface based on the first request for wireless uplink resources. The second request for wired uplink resources is related to uplink resources of a wired uplink channel of the gateway device.

A network device or system can operate to enable a security pass-through with a user equipment (UE) and further define various virtual functions between a physical access point (pAP) and a virtual AP (vAP) based on one or more communication link parameters (e.g., latency). This disclosure relates to offloading processing intensive tasks in communication protocol specific operations off the device, e.g. to another network node connected to the device via a network. Such tasks may for example include flow control, segmentation/desegmentation, and/or error control. As part of error control, protocols of the transport protocol layer of the OSI protocol stack may include checksum calculation to ensure reliability of the (payload) data. The calculation of checksums may be processing intensive. For this reason, example client nodes that realize the offloading of processing intensive tasks in communication protocol specific operations to another network node may not utilize any transport layer protocol at all, but rely on flow control and error control implemented in most modern data link layer protocols (Layer 2 of the OSI protocol stack). Accordingly, the processing intensive tasks can be 'shifted' from the client device to another device.

A method for informing a user about communication capability mismatch in a home network is provided. The method includes receiving first information indicative of wireless communication capabilities of an access point of the home network. Further, the method includes receiving second information indicative of wireless communication capabilities of a client device connected to the access point. The method additionally includes matching the wireless communication capabilities of the access point and the client device based on the first information and the second information. If the wireless communication capabilities of the access point and the client device do not match, the method further includes configuring the access point or the client device to cause an application executed on the client device to display mismatch information on the mismatch between the wireless communication capabilities of the access point and the client device.

A disclosed example apparatus comprises performing a first received signal strength indicator (RSSI) scan to determine a beacon interval and a first beacon time for a wireless channel, calculating a second beacon time for the wireless channel based on the beacon interval and the first beacon time, and performing a second RSSI scan for the wireless channel during a time interval that includes the calculated second beacon time. In some examples, the wireless channel is a wireless channel that was previously identified as active, is a wireless channel that previously had the highest received power level, and/or is selected from a list of popular or frequently used channels. Additionally or alternatively, when a wireless channel with sufficient signal level is identified, scanning for additional channels is not performed.
