A blood processing apparatus includes a measurement device having at least one chamber element extending along a longitudinal axis and including a circumferential wall extending about the longitudinal axis, a bottom wall and a top wall together defining a flow chamber. The blood processing apparatus further includes a holder for the measurement device, the holder including a base having a reception opening for receiving the measurement device and a closure element movably arranged on the base for locking the measurement device in an inserted position in the reception opening. An ultrasonic sensor of the holder is arranged on the base. The ultrasonic sensor, in the inserted position of the measurement device, faces the bottom wall of the at least one chamber element, wherein the bottom wall extends transversely with respect to the longitudinal axis.

During the step of separating the initial medium, a solution is supplied to the separator at a flow rate via a second supply system. The flow rate of the solution is determined based on the at least one process parameter, and is reduced when the concentration of the cells measured in the initial medium increases.

Parameters of the optical set-up used for detection and signal analysis may be adjusted individually and dynamically so that disturbing effects caused e.g. by absorptive films on the inner surface of the blood collection reservoir () may be identified and prevented to thereby enhance the reliability of signal detection and analysis.

For universal use in various applications, the device includes a light source, an optical line sensor which detects the intensity of the light of the light source passing through the object as a function of location in at least one extension direction of the object, and a computer unit which compares the distribution of the light intensities detected by the optical line sensor as a function of location with at least one predetermined reference distribution. According to another embodiment, the light source supplies approximately parallel light, and the computer unit shapes the first derivation according to location of the distribution of the light intensities detected by the optical line sensor. The device is designed so that the different light sources can be easily replaced or combined.

A centrifuge chamber (,) is rotatably mounted on the rotating frame (,) to rotate about the axis of the latter. The centrifuge chamber (,) is driven in the same direction of rotation as the frame (,) but at twice the rotational speed. Coupling elements which are engaged by magnetic forces and are designed in the manner of a clutch disk or a gearwheel are used to transmit the torque to the centrifuge chamber or the rotating frame. Force is transmitted in a non-contact and wear-free manner. No lubrication is necessary, which also reduces the buildup of dust and dirt. In addition, there is little generation of noise.

An ultrasonic transmitter, particularly for an air bubble detector, having a transmitting stage and an ultrasonic crystal. The transmitting stage includes a multivibrator having a time-base circuit with two stable output states. A timing element is interconnected in the feedback loop of the time-base circuit. An ultrasonic crystal is interconnected with the feedback loop of the time-base circuit so that the electrical circuit oscillates at or near a resonance frequency of the ultrasonic crystal. The ultrasonic crystal may be disconnected so that the multivibrator oscillates automatically at its own natural frequency.
