A mechanism and method for controlling the rights and/or behavior of applications in a terminal, especially in a mobile terminal, are disclosed. At least some of the messages generated by an application residing in the terminal and destined for a communication network are diverted to an independent controlling entity also residing in the terminal. In the controlling entity, the messages are controlled before being transmitted to the network. Depending on the application and its behavior in the terminal, the control entity may modify the messages or even prevent their sending to the network. The modification may include inserting control data, such as a digest, which can be used to authenticate the application.

Control of terminal applications in a network environment

The transmission of control information from a base station to at least one mobile station in the cell of a cellular radio system takes place using a first channel and a second channel. At a first moment of time, there is an indication on the first channel about the location of the piece of control information on the second channel. At a second moment of time, later than said first moment, the piece of control information is transmitted on the second channel.

Method for using effectively the broadcast capacity in a cell

A telephone for setting up a conference call, the telephone comprising a memory for storing data relating to a first and second user; control means for retrieving said data from the memory and originating a call to the first user the control means being responsive to a signal indicating that the first call has been established originates a call to the second user.

The invention relates to a method for transferring special cell information in a communications system and a cellular system and mobile station realizing the method. The invention can be advantageously applied to cellular systems specifying cell-specific services for users, such as cell-dependent charging. An idea of the invention is that special cell identities are transferred from a mobile station to a base station system in coded form ( ) in such a manner that the transfer of special cell identity information uses fewer bits than what would be needed for the transfer of special cell identities as such. Cell identities are advantageously chosen such that the cell identities of a single area can be coded using a small number of bits. In accordance with the above-mentioned principle according to the invention the transfer can be carried out advantageously in such a manner that the first special cell identity in the special cell list is transferred as such ( ) whereafter it is transferred transfer codes ( ) which are differences ( ) of two consecutive special cell identities in the special cell list. The special cell identities in the special cell list are advantageously arranged in the order of magnitude in the special cell list. Using the solution according to the invention it is possible to transfer the special cell information on the radio path by means of a single short message so that the transfer of special cell information can be carried out quickly without using a lot of the radio path's capacity in connection with call setup and handover.

Method and arrangement for transferring special cell information in a cellular system

For transmitting information about the neighbouring cells to mobile stations, a base station of a cellular radio system creates a message ( &prime;) containing information about the neighbouring cells and transmits it to the mobile station. In addition to the transmission frequencies used in the neighbouring cells, the base station includes in the message other information characterizing the neighbouring cells ( ). In particular, the base station includes in the message information about the quality of service offered to mobile stations by each of the neighbouring cells mentioned in the message. On the basis of the message, the mobile station makes a preliminary selection of a group of the most advantageous new cells and performs measurements among this preliminary selection in order to find a suitable new cell ( ). If the measurements show that there is at least one suitable new cell among the preliminary selection, the mobile station selects a new cell from this group ( ). If the measurements show that there are no suitable new cells in this group, the mobile station selects a new cell from another group of cells than the preliminary selection ( ).

Method for handover and cell re-selection

Cellular radio system base stations (10, 12) offer various service levels and transmit control messages (14) indicating said service levels. Terminals (20) store information (22) about previous connections and, based on that information or on their own capability, produce a prediction on the service level required by the next connection. A terminal selects a cell such that the service level in the cell matches the terminal's prediction on the service level required.

Cell selection based on user profile in cellular radio system

A method is disclosed for operating a cellular telephone that includes a first step, executed in response to input from a user, of disabling the cellular telephone from receiving cellular telephone calls. A second step then periodically enables the cellular telephone to receive, store and display user-related messages from a network control channel. In one embodiment the step of disabling includes a step of de-registering the cellular telephone from the network, and the step of periodically enabling includes an initial step of re-registering the cellular telephone with the network. The step of disabling may include a step of reducing the power consumption of the cellular telephone. In accordance with a further aspect of this invention the step of periodically enabling includes an initial step of requesting the network to assign the cellular telephone to a predetermined paging frame class that insures that the cellular telephone will receive a paging message from the network every n seconds. The step of periodically enabling thus further includes the step of placing the cellular telephone in a low power mode of operation for n-x seconds, where x is a period of time at least equal to a time required to resynchronize the cellular telephone to the network control channel.
