The compound below may be used in a fire-fighting formulation along with a poly(glucoside)-alkane, a poly(ethylene glycol) monoalkyl ether, and water. The value n is 2 or 3, R is a C3-C9 alkylene group, X is —O— or —N(COCH)—, and c is a positive integer. It may be made by reacting a polysaccharide with acetic anhydride, propargyl alcohol, and an azidoalkyltris(trimethylsiloxy)silane or an azidoalkylbis(trimethylsiloxy)methylsilane. Alternatively, it may be made by reacting a polysaccharide with propargylamine, acetic anhydride, and an azidoalkyltris(trimethylsiloxy)silane or an azidoalkylbis(trimethylsiloxy)methylsilane.

An apparatus and method for producing chemielectric point-sensor systems with increased sensitivity and increased selectivity. The chemielectric sensor system includes a sensor/heater assembly, where the sensor is a chemielectric sensor whose resistance or capacitance changes upon exposure to chemical analytes. The heater functionality applies a programmed sequence of one or more thermal pulses to the sensor to quickly raise its temperature. After each thermal pulse ends the change in resistivity of the sensor is measured. Such data as a function of the pulse time and temperature are recorded and analyzed to determine the chemical composition (selectivity) and concentrations in the ambient vapor by comparison to a library dataset. The sensor operation with fast thermal pulses also allows operation at higher frequencies where the noise is lower and hence sensitivity is improved.

A molecular concentrator comprising a thermal ratchet for driving molecules from one place to another. A plurality of linear, two-dimensional, and/or three-dimensional arrangements of heater structures are arranged on or suspended above a substrate. Each of the heater structures is configured to strongly sorb a vapor of interest when the heater structure is at room temperature and to rapidly desorb the vapor when the heater structure is at an elevated temperature. The vapor sorption of the individual heater structures is made selective by surface treatments, by monomolecular film depositions or by thicker absorbent polymer depositions. By selectively heating and cooling the heater structures, vapor molecules incident on the heater structures can be directed in a desired manner, e.g., from heater structures closest to a vapor-containing environment to a sensor.

Molecular concentrator based on thermal ratcheting

A molecular concentrator comprising a thermal ratchet for driving molecules from one place to another. A plurality of conducting wires are arranged on or suspended above a substrate. Each of the wires is configured to strongly sorb a vapor of interest when the wire is at room temperature and to rapidly desorb the vapor when the wire is at an elevated temperature. By selectively heating and cooling the wires, vapor molecules incident on the wires can be directed in a desired manner, e.g., from the wires closest to the vapor-containing environment to a sensor.

A hexafluorodimethylcarbinol terminated compound, method of making it, and a composition of matter are disclosed. The compound may have the formula (CF)C(OH)-L-M-R. The substructure L may be selected from an optionally substituted propenylene group (&#x2014;CHCH&#x2550;CH&#x2014;) and trimethylene group (&#x2014;CHCHCH&#x2014;). The substructure M may be selected from a substituted or unsubstituted methylene chain, a substituted or unsubstituted oxyalkylene chain, and a silicon-containing chain or combination thereof. In one embodiment, M may be selected from &#x2014;(CH)&#x2014;, &#x2014;(OCHCH)&#x2014;, and &#x2014;(Si(CH)O)&#x2014;Si(CH)&#x2014; (CH)&#x2014;, wherein n is at least 1, e.g., n is up to 10, m can be at least 1, e.g., m is up to 10, p can be 0 and in one embodiment is from 1 to 10, and wherein q can be 1 and in one embodiment is from 1 to 12. The substructure R represents one of a halogen, &#x2014;SH, &#x2014;SZ, &#x2014;S&#x2014;S-M-L-C(CF)(OH), wherein Z represents a thiol protecting group.

A hexafluorodimethylcarbinol terminated compound, method of making it, and a composition of matter are disclosed. The compound may have the formula (CF)C(OH)-L-M-R. The substructure L may be selected from an optionally substituted propenylene group (&#x2014;CHCH&#x2550;CH&#x2014;) and trimethylene group (&#x2014;CHCHCH&#x2014;). The substructure M may be selected from a substituted or unsubstituted methylene chain, a substituted or unsubstituted oxyalkylene chain, and a silicon-containing chain or combination thereof. In one embodiment, M may be selected from &#x2014;(CH)&#x2014;, &#x2014;(OCHCH)&#x2014;, and &#x2014;(Si(CH)O)&#x2014;Si(CH)&#x2014;(CH)&#x2014;, wherein n is at least 1, e.g., n is up to 10, m can be at least 1, e.g., m is up to 10, p can be 0 and in one embodiment is from 1 to 10, and wherein q can be 1 and in one embodiment is from 1 to 12. The substructure R represents one of a halogen, &#x2014;SH, &#x2014;SZ, &#x2014;S&#x2014;S-M-L-C(CF)(OH), wherein Z represents a thiol protecting group.

Disclosed is a new ionic liquid monomer salt and methods of is synthesis and polymerization. The ionic liquid monomer salt is prepared by mixing equimolar amounts of an amine, such as tris[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)-ethyl]amine and an acid functionalized polymerizable monomer, such as 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS), which is stirred at ambient temperature until salt formation is complete. Also disclosed is a new ionic liquid polymer salts and method for making the same. The synthesis of AMPS-ammonium salt polymer is accomplished by adding 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) to the ionic liquid monomer salt and heating the homogeneous melt at 70&#xb0; C. for 18 hr.

Multifunctional self-decontaminating surface coating

The compound is a silane surface treatment agent and is useful for modifying the surfaces of silicon oxide and other metal oxides with hexafluorodimethyl carbinol functional groups. Additionally provided is a surface treatment procedure that effectively bonds it and other alkoxysilanes via homogeneous and heterogeneous amine catalysis onto metal oxide surfaces.
