An aromatic hydrocarbon modified soluble mixed aluminum hydrocarbyl-Lewis base co-catalyst composition comprising (i) at least two different classes of aluminum hydrocarbyls the first being an aluminum hydrocarbyl halide, the second being an aluminum hydrocarbyl hydride and/or aluminum trialkyl and (ii) at least one Lewis base represented by the formula: ##STR1## wherein each Y can be --OR', --NR.sub.2 and R' with the proviso that at least two be --OR' or --NR.sub.2, Z is an alkylene radical forming a 5 or 6 membered ring with the carbonyldioxy group or Z is alkyl substituted alkylene group wherein the alkyl radical can have from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, R is an aryl, allyl or alkyl group having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms and R' is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl radical having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms. A process for preparing and controlling the M.sub.n in the range of 70 to 700 of a reaction product comprising at least 90 mole % linear alpha olefins which includes polymerizing an ethylene containing gas in the presence of the reaction product of a Zirconium metal compound with R.sub.2 AlX, wherein R is an alkyl group having about 1 to about 20 carbon atoms, preferably 1 to 5, most preferably ethyl, and X is Cl or Br, in the presence of a diluent at a temperature of about 75.degree. to 200.degree. C. and an ethylene pressure above about 50 psia, wherein the mole ratio of ethylene to olefin reaction product is above 0.8 throughout the reaction, wherein the product olefin concentration is greater than 5 wt. % based on the diluent and reaction product, wherein the M.sub.n of said reaction product is controlled by the molar ratio of said R.sub.2 AlX/ZrCl.sub.4, said molar ratio being less than about 1.

A process for preparing alpha olefin waxes comprising polymerizing an ethylene containing gas in the presence of a hydrocarbon-soluble catalyst comprising a zirconium compound, a dialkyl aluminum halide and a monoalkyl aluminum dihalide in specified ratios in the presence of a diluent at 75.degree.-200.degree. C. and maintaining the mole ratio of ethylene to total olefin reaction product above 0.8 so as to produce a waxy product containing at least 90 mole % linear olefins of which greater than 50 wt % are C.sub.20+ waxes.

A process for preparing linear alpha olefins and waxes having a total product M.sub.n in the range 200 to 700 comprising at least 90 mole percent linear alpha olefins which includes polymerizing an ethylene containing gas in the presence of the reaction product of a zirconium halide compound with an aluminum cocatalyst selected from the group consisting of dialkyl aluminum alkoxides or aryloxides and dialkyl aluminum disubstituted amides in the presence of a pi base and in the presence of a diluent at a temperature of about 50.degree. to 200.degree. C. and an ethylene pressure above about 3.5 MPa, wherein the M.sub.n of said reaction product is controlled by the molar ratio of said aluminum cocatalyst/Zr halide, said molar ratio being less than about 1.

In a process for preparing linear olefins which comprises polymerizing an ethylene containing gas in the presence of a catalyst comprising the reaction product of a transition metal halide and an aluminum alkyl compound in the presence of a diluent and maintaining the mole ratio of ethylene to olefin reaction product at a relatively high level so as to produce a product comprising at least 90 mole % linear olefins, the process is improved and the product purity is maintained by killing the activity of the catalyst prior to the occurrence of deleterious side reactions which tend to reduce the product purity.

This invention relates to an improved process for preparing linear olefins and waxes, particularly linear olefin waxes. More particularly, this invention relates to an improved process for polymerizing ethylene to obtain linear olefins and waxes having a number average molecular weight (M.sub.n) ranging from about 500 to 5000. The process can be generally described as a two-stage process wherein the first stage is an ethylene oligomerization followed by a second stage metathesis. Still more particularly, this invention relates to an improved process for polymerizing ethylene to obtain a product comprising at least 70 weight percent linear olefin waxes.

Two stage olefin wax process

A new improved catalyst system for alpha-olefin type polymerizations includes a metal alkyl compound selected from the group consisting of R.sub.2 WY or R.sub.3 W and an organomagnesium compound R'MgX in combination with a Group IVB-VIII transition metal compound. The improved catalyst system provides both increased polymerization activity and polymers having a high degree of isotactic stereoregularity.

A new improved catalyst system for alpha-olefin type polymerizations includes a metal di- or tri-halide compound of Al, Ga, or In and a diorganomagnesium compound in combination with a Group IVB-VIII transition metal compound. C. and an ethylene pressure above about 3.5 MPa, wherein the M.sub.n of said reaction product is controlled by the molar ratio of said R.sub.2 Zn/ZrCl.sub.4, said molar ratio being less than about 1.

A new improved catalyst system for alpha-olefin type polymerizations, includes at least one metal alkyl compound having the formula R.sub.3 '' M in combination with a Group IVB-VIII transition metal compound on a support and at least one hindered Lewis base and at least one unhindered Lewis base wherein R is selected from the group consisting of C.sub.1 to C.sub.20 secondary or tertiary alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl or aralkyl groups; M is selected from the group consisting of aluminum, gallium, or indium. The improved catalyst system provides polymers having increased isotactic stereoregularity as well as lower catalyst residue.
