Aqueous compositions suitable for sanitary can coatings comprising the neutralized water dispersible ionic polymer product of the reaction of an epoxy resin with acid polymer, and a different resin which is not necessarily self-dispersible in water, as well as several methods of preparing such compositions, are disclosed. The second resin which is not necessarily self-dispersible in water is introduced either preformed at any stage or is prepared, in situ, in the presence of the epoxy resin esterified with acid polymer either before the ionic epoxy resin-acid polymer product is dispersed in water. The epoxy resin-acid polymer product acts as a polymeric surfactant capable of keeping even a normally non self-dispersible second polymer in stable dispersion in water.

Water based coatings have been developed comprising water containing dispersed liquid droplets of water immiscible, hydroxy functional organic material, which are emulsified in the water, the water having dispersed therein an amine salt constituted by a salt of a solubilizing acid with a polyamide having a plurality of terminal primary amine groups. About one of the primary amine groups in the polyamide is unsubstituted, and at least about 70% of the isocyanate-reactive amino hydrogen atoms in the polyamide other than in the unsubstituted primary amine group are reacted with one isocyanate group of an organic polyisocyanate, the remaining isocyanate groups of which are blocked by a volatile blocking agent. The blocked isocyanate groups are nonreactive at room temperature and the unblocked isocyanate groups are reactive with the hydroxy functionality of the organic hydroxy functional material at elevated temperature. These coatings can be applied by electrocoating or other more conventional application methods and are curable to hard, flexible, solvent resistant films suitable for use in primer and other coatings applications.

There is disclosed a metal container containing a beverage or food having its integral surface coated with an adherent sanitary liner, the coating being a cured layer of a water-based coating composition consisting essentially of from about 5 percent to about 60 percent by weight of an amine-neutralized or partially neutralized interpolymer formed in the presence of a vinyl polymerization catalyst and in the absence of mercaptan, the interpolymer being comprised of from about 10 percent to about 30 percent of acrylamide or methacrylamide in units of the structure: ##STR1## where R' is methyl or hydrogen and R is hydrogen or lower alkyl, from about 5 percent to about 15 percent of units formed by vinyl polymerization of monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid; from about 10 percent to about 50 percent of units derived by vinyl polymerization of isobutyl methacrylate; and from about 20 percent to about 45 percent of nitrile, such as acrylonitrile; wherein the interpolymer is solubilized by neutralizing acid groups of the interpolymer with a sufficient amount of monomeric amine to produce at least 0.200 milliequivalents of salt per gram of resin solids; and from about 40 percent to about 95 percent by weight of a liquid medium consisting of a mixture of water-soluble or water-miscible organic solvents and water, wherein at least 60 percent by weight of the mixture is water. These cured coatings are characterized by improved impermeability to lubricants and flavor components and also better resist water at elevated temperature so as to also be useful as an exterior coating.

There is disclosed a metal container containing a beverage or food having its internal surface coated with an adherent sanitary liner, the coating being a cured layer of a water-based coating composition consisting essentially of from about 5 percent to about 60 percent by weight of an amine-neutralized or partially neutralized interpolymer formed in the presence of a vinyl polymerization catalyst and in the absence of mercaptan, the interpolymer being comprised of from about 10 percent to about 30 percent of acrylamide or methacrylamide in units of the structure: ##STR1## where R' is methyl or hydrogen and R is hydrogen or lower alkyl, from about 5 percent to about 15 percent of units formed by vinyl polymerization of monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid; from about 10 percent to about 30 percent of units derived by vinyl polymerization of monovinyl aromatic monomer; from about 10 percent to about 30 percent of units formed by vinyl polymerization of flexibilizing monomer selected from lower alkyl acrylates such as ethyl acrylate; and from about 20 percent to about 45 percent of nitrile, such as acrylonitrile; wherein the interpolymer is solubilized by neutralizing acid groups of the interpolymer with a sufficient amount of monomeric amine to produce at least 0.200 milli-equivalents of salt per gram of resin solids; and from about 40 percent to about 95 percent by weight of a liquid medium consisting of a mixture of water-soluble or water-miscible organic solvents and water, wherein at least 60 percent by weight of the mixture is water. These cured coatings are characterized by improved impermeability to lubricants and flavor components and also better resist water at elevated temperature so as to also be useful as an exterior coating.

High solids, low viscosity, radiation curable, aqueous coatings compositions are provided by adding a small proportion of water to a polyethylenically unsaturated resin, preferably a liquid polyester containing acrylate groups and carboxyl functionality enabling improved dispersibility with water in the presence of a base, and a water soluble monoethylenically unsaturated monomer selected from acrylamide and N-methylol acrylamide is added to lower the viscosity of the composition and also to improve the cure. An ultraviolet photosensitizer, such as benzophenone, is added, preferably together with a tertiary amine cosensitizer, to enable ultraviolet cure.

Radiation curable aqueous coatings

Monoethylenically unsaturated monomers including an amide monomer are copolymerized in organic solvent solution to provide an amide copolymer solution, and volatile nitrogen-containing materials are removed from the solution without removing more than 15% of the solvent, based on the weight of the solution, and then the amide copolymer is reacted in the solution with formaldehyde in the presence of an acid catalyst, to methylolate the same.
