Method and system for providing cooling of components in a data storage system

A computer system includes a chassis which is generally U-shaped in lateral cross-section and a cover which together define an internal cavity. A fan pack for cooling the computer system is removably disposed within the internal cavity. The fan pack includes three stacked pairs of individual fan units which are disposed in a row within a rectangular housing. The computer system also includes three power supplies for providing power for the computer system, each power supply being slidably disposed within associated power supply receiving channel formed in the chassis. Each power supply includes a housing, power supply electronics disposed within the housing, and a male electrical connector having both alternating and direct current connection capabilities. The male electrical connector is mounted on the housing in electrical connection with the power supply electronics and includes a frame, a pair of spaced apart alternating current (AC) connection pins disposed within the frame and a plurality of direct current (DC) connection pins disposed within the frame. The computer system further includes an indicator unit for displaying the operation state of the computer system. The indicator unit includes a hollowed housing mounted on the chassis and indicator unit electronics disposed within the housing. The indicator unit electronics include a printed circuit board having a top surface, a bottom surface and a line of weakness which enables for the printed circuit board to be divided into two separate pieces. The indicator unit electronics include an LED display mounted on the printed circuit board and a flexible connector having a first and second ends which are mounted on the printed circuit board on opposite sides of the line of weakness so as to electrically connect the printed circuit board upon separation through the line of weakness.

Computer system

A disk array subsystem for use in a data processing system. In one embodiment, the disk array subsystem comprises a generally rectangular chassis having a top wall, a bottom wall, a pair of side walls, an open front end and an open rear end. A fan pack is removably mounted over the open rear of the chassis to cool the contents thereof by drawing air into the chassis through the open front end and out of the chassis through the open rear end. Disposed within the chassis are three power supplies, a pair of controller boards, a backplane, and a set of twenty disk drive modules. A mounting structure comprising four first disk drive module guide plates and a pair of second disk drive module guides is fixedly mounted within the chassis for removably mounting the disk drive modules in the chassis through the open front end and for placing the disk drive modules in approximate alignment with the backplane for electrical connection therewith. Each first guide plate is shaped to include five parallel slotted channels, and each second disk drive module guide plate is shaped to include ten parallel grooves. Each of the twenty disk drive modules includes an elongated frame having a longitudinally extending T-bar adapted for slidable insertion into one of the slotted channels and a longitudinally extending fin adapted for slidable insertion into one of the grooves. The T-bar is shaped to include a detente, and the slotted channel is shaped to include a pawl, the detente and the pawl being interengageable so as to permit the disk drive module to be secured in place on its associated slotted channel.

A disk drive module adapted for use in a data processing system, the system including first and second disk drive module guide plates. The disk drive module comprises an elongated, generally rectangular frame. The top wall of the frame includes a fin slidably insertable into a groove formed on the second guide plate, and the bottom wall of the frame includes a T-bar slidably insertable into a channel formed on the first guide plate. The T-bar includes a detent which releasably engages a pawl formed in the channel for securing the T-bar within the channel. A 3.5 inch disk drive and a regulator card are mounted within the frame. The regulator card is mounted on the frame for movement in three directions using bifurcated squeezable snaps inserted through oversized holes formed in the regulator card. Each snap includes a tab which limits upward movement of the card.

A disk drive module adapted for use in a data processing system, the system including first and second disk drive module guide plates. The disk drive module comprises an elongated, generally rectangular frame. The top wall of the frame includes a fin slidably insertable into a groove formed on the second guide plate, and the bottom wall of the frame includes a T-bar slidably insertable into a channel formed on the first guide plate. The T-bar includes a detent which releasably engages a pawl formed in the channel for securing the T-bar within the channel. A 3.5 inch disk drive and a regulator card are mounted within the frame. The rear edge of the regulator card includes an edge connector which extends rearwardly beyond the frame a short distance. To ensure that the edge connector is properly guided into engagement with a corresponding electrical connector in the data processing system, the regulator card is mounted on the frame for movement in three directions. This is accomplished by mounting the regulator card on a side wall of the frame using bifurcated squeezable snaps inserted through oversized holes formed in the regulator card. Because the holes are oversized relative to the snaps, the card can move in the plane of the card. Each snap includes a tab which limits upward movement of the card. The distance from the tabs to the side wall is greater than the thickness of the card; therefore, the card can also move in a direction perpendicular to the side wall.

A disk array subsystem for use in a data processing system. In one embodiment, the disk array subsystem comprises a generally rectangular chassis having a top wall, a bottom wall, a pair of side walls, an open front end and an open rear end. A portable computer is sized to fit into a businessman's attache case and may be seated on a surface for use in either a normal position or a tilted forward position. The portable computer includes a housing having a base, a front top cover, a rear top cover and a foot door. The front top cover is pivotally attached to the front of the rear top cover and the rear top cover is fixedly attached to the base. Computer electronics (i.e. printed circuit boards), and two floppy disk drives are mounted inside the housing on the base at the rear and a full size keyboard is mounted inside the housing on the base at the front. A battery pack is disposed in the rear top cover of the housing. A full size liquid crystal display monitor is mounted on the front top cover. The foot door is movably mounted on the back of the base. When the front top cover is pivoted open the display screen is viewable and the keyboard is accessible. When the foot door is in a closed position the keys on the keyboard are at the optimum angle for typing with the portable computer resting on the lap of a user and when the foot door is in an open position the keys on the keyboard are at the optimum angle for typing with the portable computer resting on a desk or table and tilted forward.
