A compact and efficient optical illumination system featuring planar multi-layered LED light source arrays concentrating their polarized or un-polarized output within a limited angular range. The optical system manipulates light emitted by a planar array of electrically-interconnected LED chips positioned within the input apertures of a corresponding array of shaped metallic reflecting bins using at least one of elevated prismatic films, polarization converting films, micro-lens arrays and external hemispherical or ellipsoidal reflecting elements. Practical applications of the LED array illumination systems include compact LCD or DMD video image projectors, as well as general lighting, automotive lighting, and LCD backlighting.

High-density illumination system

A compact and efficient optical illumination system featuring planar multi-layered LED light source arrays concentrating their polarized or un-polarized output within a limited angular range. The optical system manipulates light emitted by a planar light emitters such as electrically-interconnected LED chips. Each light emitting region in the array is surrounded by reflecting sidewalls whose output is processed by elevated prismatic films, polarization converting films, or both. The optical interaction between light emitters, reflecting sidewalls, and the elevated prismatic films create overlapping virtual images between emitting regions that contribute to the greater optical uniformity. Practical illumination applications of such uniform light source arrays include compact LCD or DMD video image projectors, as well as general lighting, automotive lighting, and LCD backlighting.

Uniform illumination system

An image projection system for generating an image on a projection screen using a highly compact geometry. The optical system uses polarized light manipulated by at least one of a conicoid, or plane optical elements to effect a folded mirror system to project an image onto the screen.

Image projection system

An image projection device having a spatial light modulator and a polarized source system for illuminating the spatial light modulator such that light of a first polarization state illuminates one region of the spatial light modulator and light of a second polarization state illuminates another region of the spatial light modulator. Preferably, the image projection device includes a first set of polarization selective light processing elements, including a first conicoid element which passes light of the first polarization state and reflects light of the second polarization state and a second set of polarization selective light processing elements including a second conicoid element which passes light of the second polarization state and reflects light of the first polarization state.

A 0.005-0.020 inch thick thermoplastic sheet containing 20-80 weight percent metal alloy biocide particulate, such as 50 micron copper powder, protects submarine structures from adhesion of flora and fauna. The sheet is isotropic and inelastically deformable in the plane of the sheet. The sheet is heated to form and adhere it to the ship hulls and the like. An intermediate lower melting point film and other aids are employed in the adhering step. Heating of the sheet prior to the adhering process minimizes liberation of environmentally harmful volatiles. The sheet is removable by heating, so the material may be recycled.

Thermoplastics sheets for protecting sub-marine structures

A light emitting device includes a reflector assembly combined with a chassis. A light source is coupled to the reflector assembly. A reflective surface is formed on the reflector assembly to reflect light generated by the light source. A transparent cover is mated to the chassis enclosing the reflector assembly and the light source.

Light emitting device

Nickel base superalloy articles, especially gas turbine disks, are provided with substantially enhanced resistance to crack growth through a specific heat treatment. The heat treatment employs a true solution treatment step followed by a subsolvus solution treatment step, followed by at least one aging step. The effect of this series of heat treatment steps is to provide a microstructure having an optimum arrangement of gamma prime particles, with respect to both size and location. Reductions in crack growth rates of several hundred percent relative to prior art heat treatments are achieved.

Superalloy heat treatment for promoting crack growth resistance

A series of superalloy compositions are described, which when processed according to a described processing sequence, produce homogeneous superalloy articles which contain an exceptionally high amount of the gamma prime phase. These alloys contain large amounts of aluminum and chromium and hence are quite oxidation resistant. The processing sequence includes rapid solidification to suppress the formation of the low melting eutectic phases which would otherwise occur.

A photographic background device enables a photographer to include a scene reproduced on a film transparency as background for photographed subjects. A transparency is illuminated while a beam splitter mirror directs light from the illuminated transparency to the camera lens, while allowing light from the subject to pass through the mirror to the camera lens. A movable lens system of positive power is provided to allow the transparency image to appear in focus at the lens. Vignetting is alleviated by locating a concave mirror on the side of the beam splitter opposite the side on which the movable lens system is located. In this manner, the illuminated film transparency image will pass through the beam splitter, be reflected by the concave mirror back to the beam splitter and be reflected from the beam splitter to the camera lens.

A chromatically neutral viewfinder optical system of positive forward and rearward elements and including therebetween a substantially zero power doublet which neutralizes chromatic errors generated by the positive elements.

The constitutionally complex alloys, particularly those exhibiting good high temperature strength and prone to the development of unacceptable heterogeneity in conventional casting operations, are produced by consolidation of a cold-worked particulate material which is sized to preclude the development thereon, in the time span at temperature used in consolidation, of undesirable surface phases such as carbides which inhibit particulate bonding.
