A candle management device automatically extinguishes a burning candle upon expiration of a user selected time period. The device shields the candle from foreign objects and reduces the risk of undesired combustion. The doors and actuation mechanism used to isolate the candle from the atmosphere and extinguish the candle are contained within the candle management device and are kept from operational interference by outside objects.

Techniques for controlling sewing machine stitch length based on thread usage are provided. The techniques include a sewing machine computer storing a stitch length setting and using a thread movement sensor to sense the movement of thread as the thread is drawn from a spool due to the user moving an object relative to a sewing machine needle and thereby drawing thread from the needle and the spool. The techniques also include a sewing machine computer receiving information from the thread movement sensor and determining a length of thread drawn from the spool after formation of a previous stitch, comparing the length of thread with the stitch length setting, and operating a sewing machine motor to create a stitch when the length of thread drawn from the spool after formation of the previous stitch corresponds to the stitch length setting.

A computer-controlled quilting machine uses a hand held stylus to create the patterns which are sewn into a quilt. The machine can quilt in real time, following the movement of the stylus as a user traces any desired object or design. The machine allows a user to easily sew a desired pattern into a quilt, and also provides greater access to quilting to those persons who are unable to operate other types of quilting machines, while retaining much of the appeal of hand quilting.

Method and system for freehand and realtime quilting with a computer-controlled quilting machine

A visual display device is constructed which uses the 'persistence of vision' effect of human vision and responds to kinetic motions of the user as the device is held and swung by an operator. Displays may consist of alphanumeric and graphic data with image symmetry not required. A microcontroller adjusts the display to conform to the speed and width of the users swing, synchronizing the display to the users motions. Both the user and viewers of the device are enabled to see the displayed images correctly oriented and stable within the path of the swinging device. The user is provided with visual and or audio feedback, which helps in coordinating a steady swing, and gives an indication of the orientation of the displayed data. The device is fabricated in such a way that costs are at a minimum, allowing this technology to be used in widespread disposable or reusable applications. The technology is expanded to displays in which the viewer provides the kinetic motion and the device is held stationary.

A pump for heating high viscosity oil and elevating it to a ground level from a subterranean level. The pump, which is preferrably of the type which produces and is operated by sonic pressure waves of special character, includes a ground level generator for producing pump operating forces that are transmitted to the subterranean level for reciprocally operating a subterranean heating and oil elevating unit which has a special magnetic piston reciprocal in a non-permanently magnetizable housing for generating heat and further has a reciprocal operating mechanism for intaking the heated oil and elevating it to the ground level.
