The present invention relates to the novel monomers generically identified as bis(4-hydroxyphenyl thio)benzenes, to a process for their production and to their use in the preparation of polycarbonates, polyurethanes, polyesters, polysulfones and polyethers.

The invention relates to an aromatic, high molecular weight thermoplastic copolycarbonate comprising the reaction product of a sulfur-free aromatic diphenol, a sulfur-containing diphenol, a branching agent and a carbonic acid derivative, characterized in having improved flame resistance. The invention further relates to a process for the preparation of said copolycarbonate.

Polycarbonates are provided having improved critical thickness values based on an aromatic diphenol preferably bisphenol A and an aromatic diphenol thioether. By incorporating 2 up to 20 mole percent of the aromatic diphenol thioether based on the total diphenol content into the polymer, the critical thickness of the article molded from the polycarbonate is substantially improved.

The present invention pertains to a halogen-containing, copolycarbonate blend having improved critical thickness and flammability properties comprising an aromatic copolycarbonate comprising the reaction product of an aromatic diphenol, an aromatic thiodiphenol and a carbonic acid derivative, such as phosgene or carbonyl bromide, blended with an effective amount of a halogen-containing compound. In a preferred embodiment, the copolycarbonate blend also contains small amounts of a perfluoro sulfonic or carboxylic acid salt.

Polycarbonates are pigmented with an opaque pigment such as TiO.sub.2 and contain, intimately mixed therein, a silica at a level of 0.01 to 3% by weight. The silicas are those produced by the flame hydrolysis of SiCl.sub.4 and have a particle size up to about 10 microns. The pigmented polycarbonates can be moulded to form articles having excellent surface appearance and are especially adapted for moulding polycarbonates in moulds having radical contours and fine interstices which constrict the flow path of the polycarbonate during moulding.
