A process for opening a combination lock having a known opening sequence with a tool having a driven portion operable only upon receipt of an authorization, the process including associating the tool's driven portion with the lock such that the driven portion automatically calibrates with the lock irrespective of the initial position of the lock and authorizing the driven portion to proceed through the known lock opening sequence of a predetermined series of clockwise and counterclockwise rotations to unlock the lock. A method of opening a combination lock with a tool, the combination lock having an opening sequence consisting of clockwise and counterclockwise rotations of a non finger manipulable lock opening component, the method including mating the tool with the lock opening component and operating the tool to rotate the lock opening component through a series of clockwise and counterclockwise rotations corresponding to the opening sequence to unlock the lock.

Disclosed is a system for locking and unlocking a component, where the system comprises a lock adapted to lock a component, the lock capable of being opened by manipulation of a combination mechanism, the lock having a communication apparatus for communicating information related to the opening of the lock with a tool. The system further comprises a tool matable with the lock and adapted to open the lock by manipulation of the combination mechanism, the tool adapted to receive the communicated information related to the opening of the lock from the communication apparatus. Also disclosed are locks and tools suitable for use in such a system, and methods of opening at least one combination lock with a tool.

A device for placing the time and date on notepaper comprises a container, a tray within the container for holding a pad of notepaper, and means for biasing the tray upwardly. The device includes a thermal print head attached to the bottom surface of a cover for the container for printing a time and date stamp on a single sheet of paper in response to the user's removal of the sheet from the container.

An electric scooter employs an equalization circuit for charging a plurality of series connected batteries used to power the scooter. The equalization circuit has a number of cell circuits, each connected across the terminals of a corresponding battery. Each cell circuit includes two voltage detectors, a first implemented as a modular voltage monitor for detecting a low voltage across the battery terminals, and the second implemented as a Zener diode to detect a high voltage across the battery terminals. Both voltage monitors are enabled by an optocoupler switch. When the switch is turned on and either a low or a high voltage condition is detected, the cell circuit outputs a signal reflective of this condition through a second optocoupler. During a constant current charging phase, a high voltage condition causes the cell circuit to cause a portion of the charging current to bypass that battery, thus achieving equalization. A controller, which selectively enables the first optocoupler, also receives outputs from logic circuitry which tells whether any of batteries have low voltage and also whether the series connected batteries are fully charged. The scooter monitors the batteries for low voltage conditions during starting and also during quiescent states, i.e., low or no current draw, when it is being operated.

An umbrella includes a hollow tubular handle extending in an axial direction, the handle having an upper edge and a lower portion; an elongated rod having an upper end and a lower end, the elongated rod movable in the axial direction within the hollow tubular handle; a plurality of struts pivotally mounted to the upper end of the elongated rod for movement in a range between a storage position substantially parallel to the axial direction and adjacent to the elongated rod, and an open position substantially perpendicular to the axial direction; a web of flexible, water-resistant material connected to the struts; and a locking mechanism connected to a lower end of the elongated rod for engaging with a lower portion of the tubular handle to releasably lock the struts in either the open position in which the struts rest on the upper edge of the tubular handle, and the closed position in which the struts are positioned within the tubular handle, the locking mechanism including two diametrically opposite spring fingers mounted to the lower end of the elongated rod, each spring finger having a first step for engaging with the lower portion of the tubular handle to releasably lock the struts in the open position, and a second step for engaging with the lower portion of the tubular handle to releasably lock the struts in the closed position, the first outer step being positioned below and radially outward of the second outer step on each spring finger.

Emergency umbrella

Apparatus for folding a paper sheet includes a pair of spaced parallel flaps pivotally mounted on a frame. A die has an inner side and is mounted on the frame between the flaps to allow insertion of the paper sheet to a loaded position on the inside of the die and in front of the flaps. An actuator is coupled to the flaps for alternately closing them against the inner side of the die to doubly fold the paper sheet.

An electronic typographic apparatus includes a multiline display, the top of the display being justified and the lower line constituting a data entry line. Coded typographic data is stored in a character memory, the dot format for the display of characters in different scan lines being produced upon application of stored character data to character generating read only memories. The data entry position of the data entry line of the display is stored and new data is entered into the character memory with counting circuits being employed to keep track of the data entry line and position. The display is 'rolled up' one line upon receipt of a carriage return signal, and in the backspacing function, stored data is deleted. Backspacing may proceed into a line previously rolled up, in which case all of the lines are rolled down. The characters are displayed with proportional widths, as a function of a Character Clock signal generated from a read only memory instantaneously responsive to coded signals of the character memory just prior to the display of elements of a character. Word spaces of the top line of the display are counted to develop justification data for justifying the top display line, the justification data being stored in a separate memory and 'stretching' the word spaces of the top display line by inhibiting the character clock, while the display scan continues, for the determined periods. Once justification is complete, the aforementioned determined periods are digitized and directed to the hard copy printing device to define the amount of 'stretching' required. Tab stops are stored in a separate memory, and a circuit responsive to a tab signal stored in the character memory also inhibits continuation of the character clock signal until a tab stop signal is received from the tab stop memory. A special timing circuit determines when a key has been depressed for more than the normal amount of time, and then activates a gating circuit to initiate repetitive key operation.

Electronic typographical display device with justification feature

An electronic video display of alpha-numeric characters such as words and numbers, in which a justified display is provided on the video screen. The display is generated by sequentially reading characters from a circulating memory corresponding to a display line, in response to stepping pulses. The time delay between each stepping pulse and the one preceding it corresponds to the width of the preceding character, or of the preceding word space. Justification is accomplished by increasing the time interval between stepping pulses corresponding to preceding word spaces, to incrementally increase the width of each word space until the last character on the line is at the right margin.

A system for producing signals for proportional display of characters on a display device. The system utilizes a memory means for storing codes for a text and means for sequencing through the memory. The output of the memory which addresses (1) a character dot generator ROM and (2) a character width defining ROM. A shift register receives parallel inputs from the dot generator ROM and delivers a sequence of output levels to control the intensity of a display oscilloscope beam. Another shift register receives parallel inputs from the character width ROM (2) one input at a time, so that its output pulse occurs after the writing of the character is finished. Means is provided for applying the pulse output of the parallel input shift register to advance the character memory means to the next character to be displayed.
