There are provided thermoplastic compositions comprising a polyphenylene ether and a rubber modified polystyrene resin having a discontinuous phase comprised largely of particles consisting of a core of polystyrene in a shell of a diene rubber membrane, said particles constituting at least 30 percent of the total volume of the rubber-modified polystyrene. Such compositions provide molded articles with substantial and unexpected properties in impact resistance, transparency and surface gloss, particularly at low mold temperatures, in comparison with known compositions of rubber modified polystyrene alone or those of other polystyrenes combined with polyphenylene ethers.

Novel compositions are provided which comprise a polyphenylene ether, optionally a high impact polystyrene, optionally, an effective amount of an aromatic phosphate flame retardant, and a low molecular weight polymer selected from a polyolefin glycol or a polyamide, said composition being free from or excluding a substantial content of polyolefin, such as polyethylene. Such compositions when molded are readily paintable, and exhibit good adhesion between the paint and the molded compositions as distinguished from compositions containing polyolefins, such as polyethylene, which has been found to adversely affect paint adhesion. In addition, the novel compositions possess good or improved Izod and Gardner impact strengths, and in the case of polyolefin glycol, such as polyethylene glycol, the mutual solubility of all the components of the compositions is increased. Included within the disclosure of the invention are methods of preparing and molding such compositions and the molded products obtained therefrom.

Novel compositions are provided which include a polyphenylene ether resin and EPDM-rubber polystyrene modified or polymerized with silicone oil which is free from unsaturated hydrocarbon groups. Included within the disclosure are methods of preparing and molding such compositions and the molded products obtained therefrom. The compositions provide molded products with substantially better room temperature properties, such as Izod impact and Gardner impact strengths, and surface appearance (gloss), than blends of polyphenylene ether with EPDM-polystyrene with no modifier or modified with an aliphatic mineral oil. Both Izod and Gardner impact strengths at low temperatures are also improved. Also included within the scope of the invention are reinforced and flame-retardant compositions of said polyphenylene ether resin and said EPDM-polystyrene polymerized with silicone oil.

The compositions when molded exhibit improved ductility and impact strength. Improved thermoplastic compositions are described. These compositions exhibit low resistivities making them particularly suitable for use in electrical applications. These compositions comprise a composition of polyphenylene ether and alkenyl aromatic resins in combination with an effective amount of anti-static agent. The anti-static agent is a styrene-allyl alcohol copolymer, anionically polymerized poly(ethylene oxide) or a combination thereof.

There are provided thermoplastic compositions comprising a low molecular weight polyphenylene ether resin which has an intrinsic viscosity of less than about 0.4, preferably less than 0.33 deciliters/gram as measured in chloroform at 30.degree. C., a styrene resin and an elastomeric block copolymer of a vinyl aromatic compound and a conjugated diene. The compositions are moldable to articles having good impact resistance.

Novel plated compositions are disclosed which include a polyphenylene ether resin, a small-particle EPDM rubber-modified alkenyl aromatic resin, and a hydrogenated A-B-A block polymer. A novel process is provided for preparing a blend of a polyphenylene ether resin and an alkenyl aromatic addition polymer which comprises using an alkenyl aromatic monomer as a solvent for the oxidative coupling of a phenol to form a polyphenylene ether resin and thereafter polymerizing the alkenyl aromatic monomer to form said blend of alkenyl aromatic addition polymer and a polyphenylene ether resin.
