A method, programmed medium and system are provided for using a payment card with an embedded RFID device. In one example, a cellular telephone or other wireless device is used to generate a one-time password (OTP), which is then transmitted by a read-write RFID in the wireless device to the read-write RFID which is embedded within a payment card. The user's phone or other wireless device then activates the writing of the OTP to the RFID of the payment card. The payment card, with the one time password now saved in the card, is then handed to the waiter or store clerk for payment approval and/or further processing. The user's OTP is then read by the merchant's RFID reader and transmitted to an approving agency/server for approval or disapproval of the user's purchase.

A data processing system employing identify indicators associated with various components of the system. The indicator may be activated whenever a corresponding component requires maintenance, field testing, installation, replacement, and the like. The user may specify global and local conditions under which an activated identify indicator is reset. After the indicator is activated, the system monitors for the satisfaction of one of the conditions. When one of the conditions is satisfied, the system deactivates the indicator automatically. The global conditions apply across logical partitions in a logically partitioned system thereby reducing the occurrence of stale identify indicators on all partitions.

Responsive to detecting a global error, a unique identifier is assigned to the global error. The unique identifier is sent to a service focal point. The partitions send error information to the focal point in association with the unique identifier. A method for providing a cellular phone user with accurate feedback of available minutes in a service plan based on specific plan usage is disclosed. A user enters service plan information including the time period of the plan, the number of peak minutes, the number of off-peak minutes, and other features associated with the plan on his cellular phone. The entered information is stored in the cellular phone's memory. Minute usage is tracked and a display of available minutes is provided to the user.

Hardware errors are stored in an error buffer for processing by one or more system partitions within a computer system. When errors are first placed in the buffer, an Already Reported Flag (ARF) is initialized to indicate that the error has not yet been reported to any of the system partitions. When one of the system partitions receives the corresponding error information by running a diagnostics routine, the ARF is set indicating that the error has been reported to at least one system partition. The system partition, in turn, uses the ARF information to determine how to handle the corresponding error. In an environment using a remote hardware service provider, the ARF determines whether to transmit the error information to the service provider. In environments without remote service providers, the ARF information is used to highlight newly reported errors to the user.

Each operating system utilizes this format to report error events.

A method for testing a computer bus using a bridge chip having a freeze-on-error option that enables a computer system's central processing unit (CPU) to recover and continue processing even when the computer bus is not functional. The testing method of the present invention remains transparent to a user and can be accomplished while performing standard diagnostics tests. In general, the present invention injects an input/output (I/O) error into a specific bus slot of the computer bus to test the functionality (such as the error recovery capability) of the bus. The present invention then recovers from the failure condition without having the computer system shutdown or stop working and without having to restart the computer system. More specifically, the method for testing a computer bus according to the present invention includes enabling the freeze-on-error option on the bridge chip, injecting an error into the specified computer bus slot and recovering from the injected error. The error recover capability of the computer bus is determined by examining the status of the bus slots both with the injected error condition and without the injected error condition.

An apparatus and method for performing a diagnostic problem determination methodology for complex systems is provided. With the apparatus and method, a diagnostic application for a system may automatically invoke additional diagnostics for child devices and/or siblings of the child devices based on status of the child devices after testing the parent device. This allows for complete testing of a subsystem in a single diagnostic execution resulting in a more complete, accurate analysis of subsystems with complex configurations such as seen with redundant arrays of independent disk drive (RAID) systems.

An apparatus, system and method for reporting field replaceable unit (FRU) replacements to a user are provided. The apparatus, system and method identify a FRU Replacement Order for an identified system error and then determines which of the FRUs in the FRU Replacement Order have already been replaced within a predetermined period of time from the current time. Those FRUs identified as having already been replaced are then flagged. The FRU Replacement Order is then output to the user with the flagged FRUs being output in a different manner than the other FRUs in the FRU Replacement Order.

A method and system for performing problem determination procedures in a hierarchically organized computer system is provided. The hardware components of the data processing system are interconnected in a manner in which the components are organized in a logical hierarchy. A hardware-related error occurs, and the error is logged into an error log file. At some point in time, a diagnostics process is initiated in response to the detection of the error. The logged error may implicate a particular hardware component, and the hardware component of the data processing system is analyzed using a problem determination procedure. In response to a determination that the hardware component does not have a problem, the logically hierarchical parent hardware component of the hardware component is selected for analysis. The logically hierarchical parent hardware component is then analyzed using a problem determination procedure. The method continues to analyze the logically hierarchical parent components until the root component is reached or until a faulty component is found.
