A system and method of conducting wireless communications between a wireless communication device (WCD) and both a first network (e.g., IS-2000) supporting voice and data services and a second network (e.g., IS-856) supporting packet data services. The method comprises providing the WCD with a primary transceiver and a secondary receiver for conducting wireless communications in a spatial diversity for the second network traffic or broadcast; disabling the secondary receiver and spatial diversity before a paging slot or 1x system acquisition and synchronization attempts; tuning the secondary receiver to a first network carrier frequency to perform first network activities; and retuning the secondary receiver to a second network carrier frequency for spatial diversity after performing the first network activities. The first network activities may include pilot set maintenance, overhead message maintenance, page match detection, or 1x system acquisition and synchronization attempts.

Apparatus and method for allowing page monitoring of a communication system during traffic/broadcast channel operation without reducing traffic performance

A novel and improved method and apparatus provide for controlling an operation of an access terminal while processing a signal from an access point in a communication system. Various aspects of the invention provide for an access terminal to disable a handoff process when its demodulator or decoder is operating to demodulate or decode a control message received from an access point. The operation of the access terminal is controlled in a manner that prevents terminating prematurely the demodulation and decoding process of a control signal by a handoff process. As a result, the access terminal may continue operating in a normal wake up/ sleep cycle period while conserving its battery power.

Method and apparatus for controlling operation of an access terminal in a communication system

A system and method of improving wireless communications between a wireless communication device and both a first network supporting voice and data services and a second network supporting packet data services. The method comprises providing the WCD with a primary transceiver and a secondary receiver for conducting wireless communications in both a simultaneous-mode and a hybrid-mode; performing simultaneous-mode-to-hybrid-mode and hybrid-mode-to-simultaneous-mode transitions based on a performance metric; and evaluating the performance metric to determine whether to perform the mode transitions. In the simultaneous-mode, the primary transceiver conducts wireless communications in the second network and the secondary receiver conducts wireless communications in the first network. In the hybrid-mode, the primary transceiver use is time multiplexed during all of the first and second networks communications combinations. When the metric measures below a threshold, the WCD reverts from one mode to another mode at paging slot wake-ups.

Apparatus and method for improving paging performance while simultaneously operating in different types of communication networks

A wireless mobile telephone () is operated so as manage the performance of 'off-frequency searches,' that is, searches for base station pilot signals that differ in frequency from the pilot signals in the mobile station's active set. Whenever frequency searching is performed (such as responsive to emerging from a reduced-power sleep mode), the mobile station performs on-frequency pilot signal searching () upon a prescribed active set frequency. Only if a prescribed off-frequency searching condition (-) is satisfied, the mobile station additionally performs off-frequency pilot signal searching () upon one or more neighboring base stations' frequencies.

This can be implemented in a variety of fashions including a receiver with a searcher configured to generate a bit sequence, a correlator configured to correlate a received signal with the bit sequence, and a processor configured to detect a first gated pilot signal as a function of the correlation, derive timing information from the first gated pilot signal, and detect a second gated pilot signal by using the timing information to control the bit sequence generated by the searcher.

Systems and techniques are disclosed wherein a gated pilot signal can be acquired faster by checking the neighbor pilot signals of the target pilot signal. A subscriber station may frequency lock onto a wrong pilot burst because a partial correlation exists between the wrong pilot burst and an adjacent pilot burst. Comparing the strength of the target pilot signal with the strength of neighbor pilot signals enables the selection of the strongest pilot signal before the timely process of frequency locking and demodulation are initiated. Grouping pilot signals with the same symbol sequence and a pseudo-random noise increment apart enables quick acquisition of a gated pilot signal.

Acquisition of a gated pilot by avoiding partial correlation peaks

Techniques for avoiding handoff to a channel impaired due to frequency dependent fading, while minimizing idle mode signaling are disclosed. In one aspect, an access terminal determines the assigned channel on an access point and caches the channel. In another aspect, the access terminal replaces a default channel associated with an access point in a cache with the assigned channel. In yet another aspect, the access terminal uses the cached channel associated with an access point when measuring channel quality of neighbor access points for use in handoff determination. In yet another aspect, the access terminal hands off to the cached channel of a neighbor access point during handoff. Various other aspects are also presented. These aspects have the benefit of factoring in frequency dependent channel characteristics when making handoff decisions, thus avoiding handoff to an access point where the assigned channel may be impaired.

The mobile station is in the sleep mode until just prior to a designated slot. Upon wakeup, the mobile station ensures a link is maintained with the network by measuring the strength of several pilots. If a neighbor pilot is stronger than the current pilot, a handoff is performed. After handoff, the Control Channel Capsule (CCC) may be demodulated by the mobile station to obtain new overhead information, such as neighbor pilots. If no handoff is performed, the reacquisition slew for the current pilot is measured and fed back to the sleep controller to determine the next wake-up time. The mobile station then returns to sleep mode.

Prior to each scan for the pilot from a particular base station, a PN mask corresponding to a phase closest to the start of a new search window is applied to a PN generator to obtain an initial phase for the PN sequence. From the initial phase obtained by the applied mask, the PN generator is then slewed to the start of the search window. The masking can be used to obtain a large phase adjustment in less time, which is likely to improve search performance.

Technique for reducing average power consumption in a wireless communications device

Provided is a system and method for constructing a data message in a communications device including a processor configured to process sequentially transmitted messages. Each of the messages requires a predetermined number of data frames. The technique of the instant invention includes receiving portions of at least two of the transmitted messages in the processor. Each of the at least two received portions includes a subset of the predetermined number of data frames and excludes a remainder of the predetermined number of data frames. The subset of one of the received portions substantially matches the remainder of the other portion. Next, a determination is made as to whether a total number of the received subsets equals the predetermined number. Finally, a synthesized messaged is produced when the total number of the subsets is at least equal to the predetermined number. The synthesized message is formed of a combination of the subsets from each of the received portions.

A method and apparatus for improving the performance of a convolutional encoder used in a slotted mode communication system. In a typical slotted mode communication system a stream of continuously convolutionally encoded symbols is transmitted by a base station. A remote unit, comprising a convolutional decoder to decode the stream of symbols periodically transits between active and inactive states. While in the inactive state the remote unit misses a portion of the continuous stream of symbols. Following the interruption of the stream of symbols, the state metrics of a trellis within the decoder are initialized. Initialization of the state metrics may be such that the decoding process will be biased towards only valid states and away from invalid states. In addition, the initialization may be such that there is not a bias towards any particular state within the trellis.
