A method for detecting the presence of flunitrazepam in a sample. Flunitrazepam contained within the sample is reduced and hydrolyzed by the addition of a hydrolyzing agent and a reducing agent. A visualizing agent is provided to combine with the reduced and hydrolyzed species corresponding to the flunitrazepam to yield a colored species providing a qualitative colorimetric indication of the presence of flunitrazepam within the sample. The invention is a rugged and dependable method suitable for use in the field.

A method for detecting reducing sugars in samples using a test reagent containing an indicator capable of producing calorimetric changes when contacted with reducing sugars. Under alkaline conditions, reducing sugars present in a sample affect a reduction of the indicator to a colorless or differently colored reduced form. The method may include the additional step of pretreating the sample with a glycosidase to convert non-reducing sugars to reducing sugars.

An improved method for detoxifying waste materials contaminated with halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons is disclosed. The method provides for detoxification of halogenated aromatic compounds by electrophilic aromatic substitution. The method also provides for the dehalogenation of the lower congeners of such halogenated aromatic compounds, as a result of chemical activation via electrophilic aromatic substitution, followed by nucleophilic aromatic dehalogenation. In addition, the method provides for the more complete dehalogenation of mixtures of halogenated aromatic compounds that contain both higher and lower congeners by increasing the efficiency of dehalogenation of the lower congeners.
