Mechanically and thermally improved rechargeable batteries, modules and fluid-cooled battery pack systems. The battery is prismatic in shape with an optimized thickness to width to height aspect ratio which provides the battery with balanced optimal properties when compared with prismatic batteries lacking this optimized aspect ratio. The fluid-cooled battery pack includes; 1) a battery-pack case having coolant inlet and outlet; 2) battery modules within the case such that the battery module is spaced from the case walls and from other battery modules to form coolant flow channels along at least one surface of the bundled batteries; and 3) at least one coolant transport means. The width of the coolant flow channels allows for maximum heat transfer.

Mechanical and thermal improvements in metal hydride batteries, battery modules, and battery packs

Mechanically and thermally improved rechargeable batteries, modules and fluid-cooled battery pack systems. The battery is prismatic in shape with an optimized thickness to width to height aspect ratio which provides the battery with balanced optimal properties when compared with prismatic batteries lacking this optimized aspect ratio. The optimized thickness, width and height allow for maximum capacity and power output, while eliminating deleterious side affects. The battery case design allows for unidirectional expansion which is readily compensated for by applying external mechanical compression counter to that direction. In the module, the batteries are bound within a module bundling/compression means under external mechanical compression which is optimized to balance outward pressure due to expansion and provide additional inward compression to reduce the distance between the positive and negative electrodes, thereby increasing overall battery power. The fluid-cooled battery pack includes; 1) a battery-pack case having coolant inlet and outlet; 2) battery modules within the case such that the battery module is spaced from the case walls and from other battery modules to form coolant flow channels along at least one surface of the bundled batteries; and 3) at least one coolant transport means. The width of the coolant flow channels allows for maximum heat transfer. Finally the batteries, modules and packs can also include means for providing variable thermal insulation to at least that portion of the rechargeable battery system which is most directly exposed to said ambient thermal condition, so as to maintain the temperature of the rechargeable battery system within the desired operating range thereof under variable ambient conditions.

Mechanical and thermal improvements in metal hydride batteries, battery modules and battery packs

A hydrogen gas cooled hydrogen storage element which includes a hydrogen storage alloy material in which hydrogen flow channels are provided. The flow channels provide pathways through the hydrogen storage material to allow for high speed hydrogen gas flow. A portion of the high speed hydrogen flow is stored within the storage material which releases its heat of hydride formation. The remainder of the hydrogen flows through the hydrogen storage material at a sufficient mass flow rate to remove the heat of hydride formation. The unit also includes an encapsulant to prevent any loose particles of the storage material from becoming entrained in the high flow rate hydrogen.

A hydrogen storage unit which uses hydrogen storage alloys to store hydrogen, and more particularly a heat transfer management/compartmentalization system for use in such system. The hydrogen storage alloy may be divided into compartments, separated by discs, further divided into sub-compartments by a flapper wheel. The discs and flapper wheel provide for optimal heat transfer throughout the system. The compartmentalization of the vessel may prevent compaction of the hydrogen storage alloys, which could lead to excessive strain on the vessel causing damage, deformation, or rupture of the vessel.

A positive electrode for use in alkaline rechargeable electrochemical cells comprising: a material comprising a compositionally and structurally disordered multiphase nickel hydroxide host matrix which includes at least one modifier chosen from the group consisting of F, Li, Na, K, Mg, Ba, La, Se, Nd, Pr, Y, Co, Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Sc, Sn, Sb, Te, Bi, Ru, and Pb. A process for forming a high loading uniformly distributed multiphase substantially nitrate free sintered positive electrode for use in an alkaline rechargeable electrochemical cell, the process comprising: (1) fabricating sintered electrode material by forming a slurry of nickel powder, water, carboxymethylcellulose binder, methyl cellulose binder, and a poly(ethylene oxide) polymer; spreading the slurry on a preoxidized perforated nickel substrate; drying the slurry; and sintering the slurry; (2) impregnating the sintered electrode material using multiple impregnation cycles to attain high loading, where each impregnation cycle comprises the steps of: placing the sintered electrode material on a rack; dipping the rack into nickel nitrate; allowing the rack to drip dry; dipping the dried rack into NaOH solution; spraying the rack in a first tank with deionized water overflowing from a second tank; dipping the rack in the second tank filled with deionized water overflowing from a third tank; dipping the rack in the third tank filling with deionized water at a rate of 8-10 gpm; drying the rack; and flipping the rack to attain uniform deposition of material; where in the median dip cycle and in the final dip cycle of the multiple impregnation cycles, the step of dipping the rack into nickel nitrate is replaced by a step of dipping the rack into cobalt nitrate to produce an enriched cobalt surface; and (3) forming the impregnated sinter into positive electrode material by presoaking the impregnated sinter in NaOH presoak tanks to substantially eliminate nitrates; brushing the presoaked impregnated sinter in a surface brushing station; charging the brushed impregnated sinter; discharging the charged impregnated sinter; rinsing the discharged impregnated sinter; and drying the rinsed impregnated sinter to complete the formation of positive electrode material.

A slurry loading apparatus for automatically loading a slurry into a substrate, the substrate having a front surface, a back surface opposite said front surface and an interior with voids between the front and back surfaces, the apparatus including a device for introducing the slurry onto the front surface and into the voids where excess slurry passes through the substrate and exits the back surface, and a device for repeatedly forcing the excess slurry back onto the back surface and into the voids.

A process for forming a high loading uniformly distributed multiphase substantially nitrate free sintered positive electrode for use in an alkaline rechargeable electrochemical cell, the process comprising: (1) fabricating sintered electrode material by forming a slurry of nickel powder, water, carboxy methyl cellulose binder, methyl cellulose binder, and a poly(ethylene oxide) polymer; spreading the slurry on a preoxidized perforated nickel substrate; drying the slurry; and sintering the slurry; (2) impregnating the sintered electrode material using multiple impregnation cycles to attain high loading; and (3) forming the impregnated sinter into positive electrode material by presoaking the impregnated sinter in NaOH presoak tanks to substantially eliminate nitrates; brushing the presoaked impregnated sinter in a surface brushing station; charging the brushed impregnated sinter; discharging the charged impregnated sinter; rinsing the discharged impregnated sinter; and drying the rinsed impregnated sinter to complete the formation of positive electrode material.

A sealed prismatic metal hydride battery greater than 10 Ah in size comprising a battery case of high thermal conductivity; and at least one bundle of metal hydride electrodes of high thermal conductivity in thermal contact with said battery case. Batteries according to the invention prevent the accumulation of heat that can damage nickel metal hydride batteries particularly during overcharge.

The electrochemical cell of the instant invention includes a case having a gas outlet, one or more positive electrodes positioned within the case, one or more negative electrodes positioned within the case electrode separators positioned between the positive and negative electrodes, electrolyte positioned within the case, and a pressure vent for releasing internal pressure occurring in the case to the surrounding atmosphere. The pressure vent is affixed to the case covering the gas outlet, the pressure vent includes a vent housing having a hollow interior area in gaseous communication with the surrounding atmosphere and the interior of the case via the gas outlet, a pressure release piston positioned within the hollow interior area, the pressure release piston sized to surround the gas outlet and having a seal groove configured to encapsulate all but one surface of a seal mounted within the seal groove, leaving the non-encapsulated surface of the seal exposed, and a compression spring positioned to urge the pressure release piston to compress the seal in the seal groove and block the gas outlet in the case.

Electrical interconnections for a large area photovoltaic cells, electrical interconnections for adjacent large area photovoltaic cells and the methods of producing those connections are disclosed herein. The cells are, preferably, of the type which include a plurality of electrically isolated, small area segments sharing a common substrate, a semiconductor body atop the substrate and a transparent, conductive coating atop the semiconductor body. The electrical interconnections include: an electrically-conductive strip interconnecting the small area segments of each large area to provide a first electrode of that cell; and access to the substrate from the layered surface of each large area cell to provide the second electrode of that cell. The electrodes may be electrically-interconnected in series or parallel.
