Milk froth generating device for generating milk froth from milk powder () and hot water comprises a hot water supply and a water heater. For simply obtaining milk froth of high quality, the milk froth generating device comprises a substantially rotation-symmetrical hot water sprayer head having hot water channels () downwardly directed and open at the bottom. Some of them are disposed close to an outer convex surface () of the hot water sprayer head and some extending close to a central axis of the hot water sprayer head (). The hot water channels are connected via a hot water distribution chamber () in the hot water sprayer head, and the hot water supply () with a hot water pressure generator and the water heater.

An espresso machine is provided with an infusion piston displaceable inside an infusion cylinder. The infusion piston is force-connected to a spring and to a device for activating the infusion piston and, in a first position, tightly encloses ground coffee inside an infusion chamber of the infusion cylinder between itself and an outlet sieve. A pressurized water inlet is connected to the infusion chamber, the infusion piston is automatically pushed by the pressure of the infusion water flowing into the infusion cylinder and counter to a spring force to a second predetermined position, thereby expanding the infusion chamber, whereupon during a pressure drop inside the infusion chamber the infusion piston is returned automatically to the first position. The infusion piston can essentially be displaced proportional to a pressure increase inside the infusion chamber, caused by the infusion water flowing in, until it reaches a nominal opening pressure for a frothing valve that closes off the infusion chamber in a downstream direction.

A safety device for a steam frothing machine to form a froth beverage, which machine has a steam pipe ( ) that is connected to a steam generator &prime; and has a steam discharge opening ( ), and a frothing head ( ), which can be pushed onto the steam pipe and surrounds the steam discharge opening ( ) in the mounted state. A coffee maker includes a reservoir for accommodating a quantity of water to brew a coffee beverage; a filter basket for accommodating ground coffee to be brewed therein; a water quantity sensor for producing a first signal representing the quantity of water in the reservoir; a coffee quantity sensor for producing a second signal representing the quantity of coffee in the filter basket; and a comparator for comparing a ratio between the first and second signals. The comparator has a first input which is connected to the water quantity sensor and to which the signal is applied; and a second input which is connected to the coffee quantity sensor and to which the second signal is applied. A display device is connected to the comparator for being actuated thereby as a function of the ratio between the first and second signals.

A coffee machine comprises a fresh water reservoir. A heating block, having a first flow heater pipe, is in fluid communication with the reservoir via a first connection line and a second connection line. The first connection line has a check valve disposed therein, the second connection line has a pump disposed therein. A coffee-making head is in fluid communication with the heating block via a pipe. The pipe ascends from the heating block to the coffee-making head. A steam nozzle is in fluid communication with the heating block via a steam line. A device fluidly connects the reservoir with the steam outlet when the pump is operating.

This invention relates to an espresso machine comprising a boiler (1) and a filter chamber (5) which is connected to the boiler (1) via a hot water line (11) and which comprises an outlet (18) and is divided via an inserted screen (6) into two chamber regions (b, c), a thermostat switch (TH1) which is responsive to the temperature within the boiler (1) and connected in series with the heating apparatus (2) to limit the temperature within the boiler to a predetermined upper value, an air pump (8) terminating in the boiler (1), a first shut-off valve (17) positioned in the hot water line (11) and a second shut-off valve (19) positioned upstream of the outlet of the filter chamber (5).

Apparatus of this type, for instance Espresso machines, comprising a plurality of preparation devices such as a coffee filter, a foaming nozzle or the like, are equipped with a multiple-way valve operable to supply hot water or hot steam to the various preparation devices. Conventional valves of this type are not sufficiently resistant against the corrosive action of the hot and frequently also aggressive water. In the apparatus according to the invention, the multiple-way valve (5) is formed as a ceramic valve comprising a number of ceramic discs (11 to 13) provided with distributor passages (14, 15, 16, 17, 23) and mounted in sealing surface contact for displacement relative to one another. The apparatus is suitable for the preparation of hot beverages, particularly Espresso.

A flow-through instantaneous electric water heater for coffee percolators has a metal casting with a substantially flat bottom portion formed with a U-shaped trough receiving therein a U-shaped electric heating element. A semi-annular boiling water chamber is formed in the casting between the arms of the U-shaped heating element adjacent the base region of the U and has an inlet and an outlet opening connected, respectively, to water inflow and outflow conduits located adjacent the legs of the heating element. The water inflow conduit has a length at least 1.3 times the length of the average flow path of water flowing through the boiling water chamber or about twice the diameter of the boiling water chamber and is thermally insulated over a major portion of its length from the adjacent heating element leg by an air gap to insure that the temperature of the fresh water flowing into the chamber from the inlet conduit is below the boiling temperature. The thickness of the casting increases toward the base of the U at an inclination angle between 1.5.degree. and 4.degree..
