A networked computer system provides a way to quickly switch to a backup data center when a primary data center fails. Each data center includes a redirect table that specifies a geographical area corresponding to each user. The redirect table is replicated on one or more data centers so that each data center has the same information. When a data center fails, the redirect table in one of the non-failed data centers is updated to specify a new data center for each client that used the failed data center as its primary data center. A network dispatcher recognizes that the failed data center is unavailable, and routes a request to the backup data center. Network routing logic then issues a redirection command that causes all subsequent requests from that client to be redirected directly to the backup data center.

According to the present invention, pool allocation and process assignment mechanisms create process nodal affinity in a NUMA multiprocessor system for enhanced performance. The multiprocessor system includes multiple interconnected multiprocessing nodes that each contain one or more processors and a local main memory, the system main storage being distributed among the local main memories of the multiprocessing nodes in a NUMA architecture. A pool reservation mechanism reserves pools of memory space within the logical main storage, and the pool allocation mechanism allocates those pools to real pages in the local main-memory of multiprocessing nodes. Processes to be created on the multiprocessor are given an attribute that indicates an associated pool. Upon creation, the process assignment mechanism will only assign a process to a multiprocessing node that has been allocated the pool indicated by the process' attribute. This process nodal affinity increases accesses by the assigned process to local main storage of that node, thereby enhancing system performance.

A method and apparatus for the intraprocess locking of a shared resource in a computer system is disclosed. A computer system operates under the control of an operating system. The operating system supports the asynchronous execution of a plurality of tasks, referred to herein as processes. Each process is capable of being executed by a plurality of asynchronously executing programs. In addition to assuring that only one process may use a shared computer resource, such as a magnetic storage device, tape drive, printer, software module, message queue, etc, at one time, the operating system also grants access to a shared computer resource at the level of a program operating within a process. When one program executing within a process accesses a shared computer resource, it requests that the operating system lock out all other programs executing asynchronous within that process, as well as other processes executing within the computer system, from that shared resource. Different types of locks, such as exclusive and shared locks, are also supported.
