A printer accurately controls the passage of print media therethrough and maintains the print media taut as the print media passes through a printing zone while the media is printed by an ink jet printer. The print media sheet is preferably carried by a rotating drum in a first direction through the printing zone, with the drum being reversed to cause the exiting of the print media sheet from the printer. A pressure fixing or fusing apparatus may be positioned to flatten ink spots on the print media as the print media exits from the printer. The pressure fixing or fusing mechanism is preferably used in the case of a hot-melt or phase-change ink jet printer.

Ink jet printer architecture and method

An ink jet printer (10) having a print head (14) for directing an ink jet toward a sheet of paper (16) includes automatic print head spacing apparatus (80) that holds the print head apart from the sheet of paper by a preselected distance. In a preferred embodiment, the printer includes a rotatable drum (20) for supporting the sheet of paper and media securing system (24) of a first predetermined thickness for securing the paper to the drum. The print head is positioned at the preselected distance after a major surface (130) of the print head engages and is pushed back by the media securing system.

Automatic print head spacing mechanism for ink jet printer

A print medium sheet feeding system for an ink jet printer having a print head with a planar array of jets is provided by clamping the leading edge of a paper after it is passed through a printing zone to a rotating assembly of parallel disks. The sheet is pulled through the printing zone by rotating the disk with the clamp being carried with the rotating drum. A platen may be provided which has a flat surface in the printing zone forming a tangent to the outer surface of the rotating disks. Alternatively, the platen may be removed and the sheet held in tension between the clamp and a nip region formed by a spring plate held against a restraining plate. In an alternative embodiment, the sheet is initially clamped against the drum by the combination of a lever arm which is selectively engagable with the drum for rotation therewith and an attached actuating arm having a plate which secures a sheet to the drum surface. The resulting clamp rotates with the drum until the sheet passes below idler rollers which are biased against the drum surface. These rollers then hold the sheet against the drum for motion of the sheet with the drum surface. The actuating arm is released from the drum after a sheet passes below the rollers, thereby allowing any sized sheet to be fed through the system.

Printer sheet feed apparatus with single driver

A print medium sheet feeding system for an ink jet printer having a print head with a planar array of jets is provided by clamping the leading edge of a paper after it is passed through a printing zone to a rotating assembly of parallel disks. Printer sheet feed system

An improved multicolor ribbon cassette system for use with a printing mechanism. A ribbon cassette is carried on a plate which is pivotally connected to a shuttle mechanism. The plate rotates about an axis which is perpendicular to a printing medium and the portion of the ribbon adjacent the printing mechanism. The pivot plate is tilted up or down to position a different part of the ribbon in alignment with a printing mechanism. The configuration of the device is such that the ribbon will remain parallel to the printing medium as it is tilted. The position of the pivot plate is controlled by means of a barrel cam driven by a stepper motor. The stepper motor is controlled by a logic circuit. An optical sensor is also connected to the logic circuit to determine whether a single color or multicolor cassette is in position.

Ribbon cassette and sensor assembly

An improved ribbon shield for use with a ribbon cassette in a printer. The shield snaps into the front of a ribbon cassette so as to cover an exposed portion of ribbon and prevent the smudging or wicking of ink onto a printing medium. The ribbon shield includes an elongated strip of flexible material such as polypropylene having a central aperture to enable the ribbon to pass through it for printing purposes. The shield includes a lower curved lead-in portion to accommodate paper motion past the cassette. The shield is held within the ribbon cassette in a flexible state. The flexed portion of the shield contacts the printing medium and forces it into close contact with the platen. Improved performance can be obtained by providing spacing ridges in the form of rings which surround the aperture.

Ribbon shield

A locking system for directly clamping the tractor assemblies in a printer to the stationary platen in order to prevent any relative motion of the tractors with respect to the platen which may be caused by a lack of straightness of a drive bar which drives the tractors. The locking device includes an L-shaped lever which is pivotal so as to clamp a rearwardly extending portion of the platen between the bottom of the tractor and the top of a leg of the lever. The device may include a cam action locking knob which positively locks the lever in its clamped position. Both the lever and the knob are made of molded plastic. In order to balance the clamping force which is applied, a lever may be connected to each side of the tractor and actuated by a pair of connected cam action knobs. Several alternate locking systems are also disclosed.

Means for attaching a tractor drive assembly to a platen

In a printing device, including a drive means such as a stepping means and a driven shaft for advancing a form, a form aligning mechanism comprises a generally cylindrical hollow knob mounted concentrically with the driven shaft by a mounting means which converts a force of sufficient magnitude applied in almost any direction to the generally cylindrical hollow knob into a longitudinal displacement of the driven shaft so as to disengage the driven shaft from the drive means, thereby permitting fine adjustment of the vertical position of the form in the printing device.

Form aligning knob

Disclosed is a mechanism for mounting a print head or like device to the shuttle of a printer. The mechanism includes means for securely fastening the print head to the shuttle and is designed to facilitate easy removal and replacement of the print head. The print head includes a cylindrical head section and a generally tapering guide section and has a pair of wedge-shaped locking fins integrally molded on opposite side of the guide sections. In addition, a pair of bosses are molded on the guide section a spaced distance from the locking fins. The shuttle includes a generally upright member having an opening through which the guide section is insertable, and includes two slots whose shape corresponds to that of the molded bosses. The bosses fit into the slots and secure the print head into the proper operating alignment. A releasable retaining assembly is mounted on the shuttle and includes two locking members adapted for clamping engagement with the locking fins. Bias spring means are utilized to urge the locking members into clamping engagement with the locking fins so as to urge the cylindrical head section into tight abutting relationship with the upright member of the shuttle.

Mechanism for operator-replaceable printhead

Apparatus for use with a pair of thermoplastic strips of the type illustrated in U.S. Pat. No. 3,608,117 wherein one strip is formed with studs longitudinally spaced at intervals and a second strip apertured and counterbored at the same intervals is used to bind sheets apertured at the same intervals at locations spaced inward from one marginal edge is described. A pressure bar is first manually moved to operative position and a handle compresses the strips together by exerting a controlled force on the pressure bar. The handle then initiates movement of a support for a knife consisting of a length of metallic ribbon material having spaced horizontal stretches in horizontal alignment with excess stud lengths of the first strip projecting through the second strip, the ribbon being under tension to hold such stretches taut. As the support moves toward the studs a current is passed through the ribbon, heating it so that the ribbon functions to cut off the excess stud length slightly below the second strip. The current then is terminated as the support moves upward forming heads on the stud stubs filling the counterbores in the second strip. By this time, the ribbon has cooled and functions to cool and harden the heads. Retraction of the handle returns the support to initial position and releases the pressure bar. The handle also actuates a punch for the apertures in the sheets, the punch being located at a different station in the machine from the binding mechanisms.
