A coating for an orbital implant where the coating has an anterior portion having a different, longer term bioabsorbability than a posterior portion. This allows the implant to have a smooth surface for insertion and to provide reduced irritation to neighboring tissues, to help prevent exposure of the porous core of the implant, and to provide a stable anchorment for extraocular muscles, but which also encourages rapid fibrovascular ingrowth. The coating is marked with a visual indicator to facilitate proper orientation. Shell materials are further selected to allow for sterile packaging, the securing of therapeutic agents thereon, and to provide adequately strong securing of the coating to the core. Apertures are formed through the coating to enhance fluid flow to and from the core, and to provide exposure of the surface of the core to extraocular muscles, and for sutures. The apertures are sized and shaped to reduce irritating surface contact with orbital tissues.

A method of preventing nerve damage positional injury during surgery includes providing a nerve damage positional injury pressure monitoring system including a site sensor with a transducer in the form of a transducer element and a ring extending outward from the transducer element, and a monitor connected to the site sensor; adhering the ring of the site sensor to the patient so that the transducer element forms a protective barrier in front of the area of the patient prone to nerve damage positional injury during surgery; using the system to continuously monitor pressure on the protective barrier formed by the transducer element in front of the area of the patient prone to nerve damage positional injury during surgery with the site sensor and monitor; and causing an alarm to be actuated to alert medical personnel of a pressure condition when monitored pressure is greater than a predetermined threshold.

A method of preventing eye-related positional injuries during spinal surgery includes providing an orbital area pressure monitoring system including a site sensor with transducer, and a monitor connected to the site sensor; using the orbital area pressure monitoring system to continuously monitor pressure on an orbital area of the patient with the site sensor and monitor; and causing an alarm to be actuated to alert medical personnel of a pressure condition when monitored pressure is greater than a predetermined threshold.

Method of preventing eye-related positional injuries during spinal surgery

An orbital implant motility peg capable of being placed in vivo in an orbital implant, wherein the peg is configured to permit rotation about a longitudinal axis of the peg during or following insertion of the peg into the implant, and wherein the peg comprises a means for removable attachment to an artificial eye. The means for removable attachment can comprise a convex surface capable of articulating with a concave surface on the artificial eye. The means for removable attachment can comprise a ball capable of providing a ball of a ball-and-socket articulation. The peg can contain a means for removable attachment that comprises a positive or a negative magnetic pole. The peg can define a cavity capable of containing a stint for attachment to an artificial eye. Also disclosed is a stint capable of being placed in such a peg cavity. The stint can comprise a means for removable attachment to an artificial eye such as a ball of a ball-and-socket articulation. Also disclosed are related prosthetic complexes and related methods.

Pegs for orbital implants

An orbital implant motility peg comprising a means for placement in vivo in a non-drilled integrated orbital implant. The peg or portions thereof can be fabricated from titanium, a titanium alloy, stainless steel, a CoCr alloy, alumina, platinum or tantalum. The means for placement can comprise an external surface of the peg which comprises threads, to facilitate screwing into the implant, and/or a slot capable of receiving a screwdriver tip, a receptacle capable of receiving a Phillips screwdriver tip, a polygonal surface capable of being held by a wrench, or a receptacle capable of being engaged by an Allen wrench.

Self-tapping pegs for orbital implants

A porous structure for implantation into the orbital cavity of a mammal who has had an ocular enucleation, evisceration or who needs to have an orbital implant replaced, the structure comprising pores having a mean size of less than 200 micrometers. Also disclosed is a surgical method for placing an implant into a mammal who has had an ocular enucleation, evisceration or who needs implant replacement, whereby the implant obtains rapid ingrowth of connective and vascular tissues. The method comprises: selecting a porous ocular implant comprising pores with a mean size of less than 200 micrometers; and, placing the implant into an orbital cavity of a mammal.

Porous orbital implant structure

Highly satisfactory orbital implants comprising granular hydroxyapatite and spheres of porous, low density hydroxyapatite are described. The implants are useful in enucleation and evisceration procedures. In enucleation procedures, the implants can be sutured to the eye muscles by either insertion in a scleral sac or other suitable container or, in the cast of spherical hydroxyapatite, sutured to the eye muscles by means of holes in the spheres. After healing, the implant is drilled to receive a peg for fixing an artificial eye to the implant to complete the prosthesis.
