A fractional horsepower motor has a thrust bearing assembly mounted on the motor shaft to dampen the axial movement of the shaft. The assembly includes a thrust collar formed of resinous material and a thrust plate formed of metal with a wave spring positioned therebetween. Apertures in the thrust plate receive resilient hook projections formed on the thrust collar as a means for coupling the plate to the collar. Torque transmitting projections formed on the thrust collar engage notches formed in the thrust plate. The hook projections and the torque transmitting projections act together to capture and hold the wave spring between the collar and plate.

Methods of making an electric motor and thrust bearing assembly for same

Disclosed are methods of making dynamoelectric machines which include use of two sheet metal cup-shaped members to form a housing that completely surrounds and encloses the stator. The stator is assembled with a can in such a manner that the core of the stator is completely contained within the can. Thereafter, a cap is positioned at the exposed face of the stator and the cap and can are joined together by a sheet metal fastening technique which displaces material from one superposed sheet into a second sheet of material. The can and cap are precision formed so that they will have precision sized and located bearing receivers and core retention regions. Both the cap and the can are provided with multiple flange locations which are utilized for fastening the can and cap together during the assembly process. The cap is also provided with a notch which accommodates a lead protecting grommet that preferably is held in place by one or more bosses or pins that are fastened in openings in still another flange formed on the can.

Dynamoelectric machine and processes for making the same

A bearing retainer for use in a dynamoelectric machine having a rotating shaft and a bearing having a passage therethrough for rotatably receiving the shaft and being positioned within a bearing seat, includes inner and outer concentric support elements. The inner support element defines a thrust portion. Each of the inner and outer support elements defines a plane. A plurality of connectors extend between and connect the inner and outer concentric support elements. The connectors are configured so as to support the inner support element in concentric relation to the outer support element and to support the inner and outer support elements such that the planes defined thereby are non-coplanar with one another. A plurality of bearing load support projections extend inwardly from the outer concentric support element. The support projections extend inwardly a distance so as to define a gap between an end of each projection and the inner support element.

A bearing assembly including a bearing member with a passageway therethrough at least in part defining a cylindrical journaling surface having a central axis and a preselected axial length is described. A partial circumferential or spherical surface on at least a part of a peripheral portion of the bearing member extends generally coaxial about the cylindrical journaling surface. A bearing seat supports the bearing member at a generally circular line of engagement defining an imaginary plane extending generally perpendicular to the central axis through the mid-point of the preselected axial length of the cylindrical journaling surface.

Methods of assembling dynamoelectric machines

Methods and apparatus for coupling a conduit to an electric motor by way of a moisture resistant two-piece connector, are described. The two-piece connector includes, in one embodiment, a boss sized to be at least partially located in an end portion of a plastic, non-metallic conduit and a protective cover that substantially covers the motor shell notch at least between the boss and the motor shell notch edges. More specifically, in the one embodiment, the two-piece connector includes first and second connector members having protective cover portions and boss portions extending from the protective cover portions. The first and second connecter members further include notch interfitting portions having engagement surfaces for contacting edge surfaces of the motor housing at an outer periphery of the notch.

Methods and apparatus for coupling an electric motor and a motor lead

A vibration isolating mounting system for an electric motor comprising includes a plurality of mounting arms formed from rod stock and each having one segment extending generally parallel to an axis of the motor and another segment extending generally perpendicular to the motor axis. The one is swaged at an end to create a pair of spaced protrusions. A plurality of circumferentially spaced retainers are mounted on the motor and adapted for passage of the end of the one segment when the arm is rotationally positioned to align the spaced protrusions in a first orientation. After insertion of the one end, the arm is rotated to align the protrusions away from the first orientation such that the protrusions engage the retainer and prevent axial motion of the one segment. In another form, a second retainer is spaced from the first retainer and the one end of each arm passes through both retainers to provide additional support between the arm and motor.

The present invention relates to an assembly for protecting motor leads extending between an electric motor shell and an external control unit or power source. The present invention in one form includes a fitting configured for insertion into a notch formed in a motor shell and for coupling to a plastic conduit or sheath which protects the motor leads. The fitting includes a boss and a notch interfitting portion. An opening formed in the boss and interfitting portion is sized to have motor leads extend therethrough. A groove formed in the interfitting portion is sized to have inserted therein the walls forming the notch in the motor shell. The outer diameter of the fitting boss is sized to be inserted into a flexible plastic conduit. Protuberances, such as partial threads, on the exterior surface of the boss provide that when the boss in inserted into the flexible conduit, the boss is not easily separated from the conduit, even at elevated operating temperatures. The motor leads extend, for example, from the motor stator, through the fitting opening, into the flexible conduit, and to an external control unit or power source. The flexible conduit may extend the entire length of the leads between the fitting and the control unit or power source housing. The fitting and conduit protect the internal motor components and the motor leads against exposure to water, oil and dirt.

A method of releasably securing a blower motor to a cover for a unit for conditioning air with the blower motor having at least one end frame and with the cover and the at least one end frame respectively including a set of means for interconnection in releasable engagement with each other, respectively. In practicing this method, the at least one end frame is positioned adjacent the cover, and the interconnecting means are respectively associated with each other. The blower motor is rotated relative to the cover, and the interconnecting means are respectively interconnected with each other upon the rotation of the blower motor thereby to releasably secure the blower motor to the cover. A lock screw is interlocked in engagement between the cover and the at least one end frame to obviate displacement of the interconnecting means from their respective interconnections in releasable engagement with each other. An outdoor unit for a central system for conditioning air and an assembly for use with a housing of such unit are also disclosed.

Terminal block assembly for a leadless motor

A terminal block assembly for a leadless motor comprises a terminal block housing, an arrangement for securing the housing in an opening in a motor shell, plural spaced-apart motor leads and terminals molded into the housing, a latching mechanism for providing a positive 'lock' with a mating connector assembly, and provisions for preventing the connector assembly from being matingly received by the terminal block assembly in other than a predetermined desired orientation. The latching mechanism comprises an open box-like structure formed on an exterior surface of a horizontal side wall of the terminal block housing. The assembly is provided with a raised projection on an exterior surface of a second horizontal side wall, in substantially opposing relation to the open box-like structure of the latching mechanism, to prevent mating of the connector and terminal block assemblies when the connector assembly is rotated 180.degree. from the predetermined desired orientation. The terminal block further includes plural vertically oriented separating walls and end walls extending between the first and second horizontal side walls to form box-like enclosures around the motor terminals. The wall thicknesses of the separating walls are substantially uniform, corresponding to widths of respective mating openings on the connector assembly, while the wall thickness of the end walls are substantially greater to prevent mating of the connector and terminal assemblies when the connector assembly is laterally offset from the predetermined desired orientation.
