Methods of manufacturing an ophthalmic lens including asymmetric gradient index optical elements

A WS12-releasing contact lens is described as well as method of manufacturing the same. The WS12-releasing contact lens comprises a polymeric lens body and WS12 releasably adhered to the polymeric lens body, and releases from 0.05 μg to 0.5 μg WS12 after 1 hour in a release media or when worn by a human subject. The WS12-releasing contact lens can be comfortably worn by a symptomatic contact lens wearer and can increase the duration of comfortable lens wearing time and/or reduce lens awareness events and/or reduce contact lens dryness in a symptomatic contact lens wearer.

A contact lens for use in preventing or slowing the development or progression of myopia, and methods of manufacturing and using such a lens. The optic zone of the lens comprises a central region having a curvature providing a base power. The optic zone comprises an annular region circumferentially surrounding the central region. The annular region comprises a treatment zone having a characteristic that reduces the contrast of an image of an object that is formed by light passing through the central region and the treatment zone compared to an image of an object that would be formed by light passing through only the central region. The characteristic that causes the contrast reduction varies with meridian around the annular region. A peripheral zone surrounding the annular region has a constant thickness profile in every meridian or a variation in thickness configured to promote rotation of the lens.

The lens includes an optic zone comprising a central region having a first optical axis, and a curvature providing a base power, and centred on a centre of curvature that is on the first optical axis. The optic zone comprises an annular region, wherein the annular region surrounds the central region. The annular region comprises at least one maximum add power meridian having a curvature providing a maximum add power, and centred on a centre of curvature that is a first distance from the first optical axis. The annular region comprises at least one intermediate add power meridian, having a curvature providing an intermediate add power of between zero dioptres of add power and the maximum add power, and centred on a centre of curvature that is a different distance from the optical axis than the first distance.

Methods of manufacturing an ophthalmic lens are described. The methods include a step of providing an ophthalmic lens; and a step of providing a photocurable film. The methods use a digital light projections system to photocure at least one region of the film to produce at least one photocured gradient index refractive element. The invention describes strategies and devices that employ control of spherical aberration or other similar asphericities to reduce the visibility of defocused ghost images. The invention describes strategies and devices that ensure that negative defocus is always coupled with negative spherical aberration (or similar asphericity), and that positive defocus is always coupled with positive SA (or similar asphericity) as a means to reduce the visibility of defocused ghost images.

Certain exemplary embodiments provide an ophthalmic lens having spherical aberration of the same sign as the patient's eye and of a magnitude effective to substantially provide a desired net spherical aberration for an optical system including the patient's eye and the ophthalmic lens where the desired net spherical aberration provides a desired increase in near vision. Certain exemplary embodiments include contact lenses, intraocular lenses, corneal onlays, corneal inlays, or corneal surgeries providing spherical aberration of the same sign as the patient's eye and of a magnitude effective to substantially provide a desired net spherical aberration for an optical system including the patient's eye and the ophthalmic lens where the desired net spherical aberration provides a desired increase in near distance vision.
