A method for user authentication in a device comprising a touch screen is provided. In operation, the device stores a user authentication code corresponding to a user. When a trigger for user authentication is detected, the device randomly selects one or more character positions in the sequence of characters. The device further requests the user to enter a character corresponding to each of the selected one or more character positions in the sequence of characters. When the device detects a user entry made using a keypad on the touch screen, the device determines whether the user entry matches a character corresponding to each of the selected one or more character positions. When the user entry matches a character corresponding to each of the selected one or more character positions in the sequence of characters, then the user is successfully authenticated to the device.

Method for user authentication in a device comprising a touch screen

An electronic device includes a data processor and data communication mechanism for: (a) transmitting, via an optical link, configuration and authentication requests/information for a second data communication link to an external device; and (b) transmitting other content data via the separate, second data communication link that is configured using the configuration data transmitted on the optical link. Data communication on the optical link is provided via modulated optical pulses from an illumination light source of the electronic device. The light source is selectively utilized for illuminating a component in the electronic device and for transmitting configuration/authentication data via optical pulses. An optical receiver also receives optically transmitted configuration/acknowledgement data from the external device.

System and method for pre-configuring and authenticating data communication links

A method and device enables data communication via optical pulses from a light source of an electronic device. A data transfer interface is provided to support processing of selected data by a processor of the electronic device. The electronic device comprises an illumination light source, which is selectively utilized for illuminating a component in the electronic device and for transmitting data via optical pulses. An optical receiver also receives optically transmitted data. The transmission and receiving of the data is provided on a bidirectional duplex communication link created with a second optical receiver and an optical data transmission mechanism of a second electronic device.

Synchronization and processing of secure information via optically transmitted data

An electronic device () having at least a first portion () and a second portion () is disclosed. The first portion is joined to the second portion by a mechanical connection. The electronic device () includes a first communication unit () present on the first portion (), and a second communication unit () present on the second portion (). The first communication unit () and the second communication unit () provide a first link for internal data communication between the first portion () and the second portion (), when communicatively engaged with each other. Further, at least one of the first communication unit () and the second communication unit () provide a second link for external data communication with an external device when the first communication unit () and the second communication unit () are not communicatively engaged with each other.

Meso-microelectromechanical system having a glass beam and method for its fabrication

A method is disclosed for fabricating a patterned embedded capacitance layer. The method includes fabricating () a ceramic oxide layer () overlying a conductive metal layer () overlying a printed circuit substrate (), perforating () the ceramic oxide layer within a region (), and removing () the ceramic oxide layer and the conductive metal layer in the region by chemical etching of the conductive metal layer. The ceramic oxide layer may be less than 1 micron thick.

A flexible active signal cable () includes a flexible printed circuit substrate (), two electrical connectors (), at least two metal conductors (), at least one flexible optical waveguide (), an optical transmitter (), and an optical receiver (). The crystallized dielectric oxide core has a thickness that is less than 1 micron and has a capacitance density greater than 1000 pF/mm. The material and thickness are the same for each of the plurality of capacitors. The crystallized dielectric oxide core may be isolated from crystallized dielectric oxide cores of all other capacitors of the plurality of capacitors.

Printed circuit embedded capacitors

High quality epitaxial layers of piezoelectric monocrystalline materials can be grown overlying monocrystalline substrates such as large silicon wafers by forming a compliant substrate for growing the piezoelectric monocrystalline layers. An accommodating buffer layer comprises a layer of monocrystalline oxide spaced apart from a silicon wafer by an amorphous interface layer of silicon oxide. The amorphous interface layer permits the growth of a high quality monocrystalline oxide accommodating buffer layer. The accommodating buffer layer is lattice matched to both the underlying silicon wafer and the overlying piezoelectric monocrystalline material layer.

Structure and method for fabricating semiconductor structures and devices utilizing piezoelectric materials

A MEMS based optical switch comprises a bottom electrode, a cantilever electrode, and a top electrode, all of which overlay a carrier board. An absence of a voltage differential between the top and bottom electrodes locates the cantilever electrode in a neutral position between the top and bottom electrodes. A presence of a voltage differential between the top and bottom electrodes locates the cantilever electrode in a position biased toward either the top electrode or the bottom electrode.

Organic semiconductor device and method

The organic MEMS according to the present invention comprises a polymeric substrate comprising a substrate surface including a first region and a second region. A polymer coating is applied to the first region to provide a coating surface that is spaced apart from the substrate surface. A terminal is disposed on the second region. A metallic trace is affixed to the coating surface such that the metallic trace forms a flexible extension over the second region. The extension has a rest position where the extension is spaced apart from the terminal, and a flexed position where the extension is disposed towards the terminal. An actuator is used to provide an electric field to deflect the extension from the rest position to the flexed position. By changing the spacing between the extension and the terminal, it is possible to change the electrical condition provided by the MEMS.
