An aqueous dispersion containing (meth)acrylate polymer particles and substituted silsesquioxane-based particles dispersed in an aqueous carrier, wherein: (a) the substituted silsesquioxane-based particles have an volume-average size of 5 nanometers or more and at the same time less than 500 nanometers as determined by dynamic light scattering; and (b) the substituted silsesquioxane-based particles are substituted only with one or more than one moiety selected from a group consisting of alkyl, aryl, hydroxyl, trace amounts of alkoxy and combinations thereof and contain 50 mole-percent or less hydroxyl substitution in the form silanol functionalities relative to moles of substituted silsesquioxane-based particle as determined by infrared spectroscopy.

The present invention provides a composition comprising 1) an aqueous dispersion of polymer particles having a core-shell morphology wherein the core protuberates from the shell; wherein the core comprises from 5 to 90 weight percent structural units of a fluoroalkylated monomer, and 2) less than 0.09 weight percent structural units of a phosphorus acid monomer; and wherein the shell comprises from 0.1 to 5 weight percent of itaconic acid or a phosphorus acid monomer, based on the weight of the shell. The present invention addresses a need in the art by providing a way of selectively concentrating fluoroalkyl functionality into polymer particles with acorn morphology, thereby providing an improvement in dirt pick-up resistance of the subsequent coating.

The present invention relates to a composition comprising a bimorphological aqueous dispersion of first and second polymer particles, wherein the first polymer particles comprise a shell and a phosphorus acid functionalized protuberating core, and the second polymer particles do not comprise a protuberating core. The composition is useful for pigmented coatings formulations.

The present invention is a composition comprising a stable aqueous dispersion of polymer particles having a core comprising structural units of: a) a phosphorus acid monomer, b) an acid monomer, c) a multiethylenically unsaturated monomer; and d) a polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated bulk monomer; and a shell comprising structural units of a1) a sulfur acid monomer, and b1) a polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated bulk monomer; wherein the core protuberates from the shell and the ratio of the structural units of the sulfur acid monomer to structural units of carboxylic acid monomer in shell is at least 0.2:1. Control of the proportion of sulfur acid monomer units to carboxylic acid monomer units results in an improvement in the viscosity stability of paint formulations containing latexes possessing acorn morphology without sacrificing hiding.
