In accordance with the present invention a casting (60) is provided to connect the car bottom (40) to the side sill (10). A connecting plate (46) is provided to attach the casting (60) to the side sill (10). Preferably the side sill (10) is generally hat shaped and is reinforced with an angle (26) at the end portion of the car which supports the shear plate (34).

An automatic vacuum relief valve assembly includes a cover plate closing an opening in a container to the atmosphere. A valve is vertically spaced below the cover plate and closes communication between the inside of the container and the outside atmosphere. A first passageway provides fluid communication between a first surface of the valve and the outside atmosphere. A second passageway provides fluid communication between the inside of the container and a second surface of the valve. When the pressure inside the container becomes less than atmospheric pressure, atmospheric pressure will cause the valve to move away from its seat and allow air to enter the container. When the pressure is equalized, the valve is biased to return to the seated position. The cross sectional area of the first passageways and the cross sectional area of the second passageways are at least equal to the cross sectional area of the valve to maximize the volume of air flow for a given cross sectional area of valve and pressure drop between the outside atmosphere and the inside of the container.

Automatic vacuum relief valve for hopper cars

A one-way gate assembly for a railway trailer hitch includes a pair of movable jaws adapted to assume a first position engaging and holding in place the kingpin of a piggyback trailer. A stiff yoke spring biases a yoke into a first position engaging the jaws to maintain said jaws in the first position. A one-way gate located on the exit side of the jaws is pivotably mounted about a horizontal axis. In one position the gate extends vertically upwardly, blocking exit of a trailer kingpin. A gate spring biases the gate to pivot the gate outwardly and away from said jaws. A first stop engages the base of the gate maintaining the gate in the vertically extending position. The stop is movable longitudinally of said hitch away from the gate to allow the gate to pivot to open position.

In a railway car trailer hitch in which a yoke maintains a pair of jaws in position engaging the trailer king pin in closed position, a pivotably mounted cam assembly is provided which moves the yoke to the open position and a stop is automatically activated when the yoke reaches the open position which maintains the yoke in open position for removal of the trailer from the hitch.
