Exemplary embodiments of the present invention relate to an induction motor including a stator having a circular cross-section and an inner passage having a longitudinal axis defining a bore, a solid core steel rotor having a circular cross-section rotatably disposed within the bore of the stator, and an air gap disposed between the rotor and the stator. A copper conductive layer is disposed on the steel rotor to increase the electrical conductance of the rotor. Exemplary embodiments adhere the copper conductive layer to the steel rotor using Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP). The HIP process encloses the steel rotor and the copper conductive layer in a containment vessel, and adheres the conductive layer to the rotor by applying high temperature and high gas pressure to the outside of the containment vessel.

Induction motor

A method of dispersing de-iceant into a stream of air flowing through an air supply line comprises the steps of placing a turbine in the air supply line; forcing at least a portion of the stream of compressed air to pass through the turbine, thus causing the turbine to spin; and using the spinning turbine to atomize the de-iceant. A preferred turbine both generates an electrical current and disperses a liquid de-iceant and comprises a rotatable shaft; a rotor connected to the shaft; a stator surrounding the rotor and being prevented from turning; electrical conductors connected to the stator; one or more blades connected to the rotating shaft at an angle to the direction of flow of air past the shaft so as to cause the shaft to rotate as air flows past the blades; a centrifuging surface connected to the shaft; and a conduit for supplying de-iceant to the centrifuging surface.

An impeller for a radial flow device selected from the group consisting of radial--and mixed-flow compressors, pumps and turbines which is designed for both aerodynamic performance and manufacturability at high production rates. The mean blade surface of the impeller is substantially helical, as the angle of any point on the mean blade surface relative to a meridional plane passing through the axis of rotation of the impeller varies linearly with the radius and z-axis location of that point relative to an arbitrary radial plane z.sub.0. A single-piece mold for making the impeller, and a method for making the mold, are also disclosed. The impeller can made in a high-speed molding process without significant post-production processing, and it can be easily withdrawn from a mold without destruction or disassembly of the mold.

Impeller for radial flow devices

The pressure head needed to drive combustion air into the combustion region (46) of a heat gun (930) is imparted to the air by a compressor blades (36) driven by a turbine whose blades (32) are interposed in the fuel conduit that leads to the combustion region (46). The expansion of the gaseous fuel, which is obtained from a pressurized source, provides the power to impose the necessary pressure head. The turbine-compressor combination is efficient enough that it can extract from the fuel flow enough power to maintain the necessary pressure head not only on the combustion gas (A.sub.1), which flows through vents (44) in a manifold (43), but also on a larger volume of air (A.sub.2) delivered downstream of the combustion region (46) to dilute the combustion products and thereby cool them to the desired heat-gun output temperature.

Turbine device for hot air generation

The pressure head needed to drive combustion air into the combustion region (46) of a heat gun 930) is imparted to the air by a compressor blades (36) driven by a turbine whose blades (32) are interposed in the fuel conduit that leads to the combustion region (46). The expansion of the gaseous fuel, which is obtained from a pressurized source, provides the power to impose the necessary pressure head. The turbine-compressor combination is efficient enough that it can extract from the fuel flow enough power to maintain the necessary pressure head not only on the combustion gas (A.sub.1), which flows through vents (44) in a manifold (43), but also on a larger volume of air (A.sub.2) delivered downstream of the combustion region (46) to dilute the combustion products and thereby cool them to the desired heat-gun output temperature.

In the embodiment depicted, the dynamometer is of an absorption type, for fluid, having fluid entries on both axial ends thereof, and a rotor having blades disposed, in a radial exit flow path, in parallel with the rotor axis. Adjustable, annular, blade shrouds, controlled simultaneously, expose more or less of the blade lengths to the radial exit fluid flow path.

Absorption dynamometer

A depicted embodiment of the apparatus comprises a housing having a chamber therewithin and a pair of ports opening into the chamber. One port admits an energized gas, and the other admits a particulate powder, into the chamber. Tubes conduct the powder through the chamber, isolated from the energized gas, to exit ends of the tubes which have convergent/divergent ejector nozzles circumjacent thereto. The ejector nozzles discharge the gas therethrough in fine streams, to draw powder from the tube exit ends for conveyance with the gas streams, and direct the streams of gas and powder to adjacent and collinear diffusers for dispersion of the gas-borne powder from the apparatus.

Particulate dispersion apparatus

The invention is a smoke generator which atomizes fog oil by means of a slinger disc affixed to, and rotating with, a turbine wheel. The atomized fog oil mixes with, and is evaporated by, the hot, turbine exhaust gas. Upon leaving the generator, the evaporated fog oil recondenses into a smoke cloud. The smoke cloud generated is to provide a visual screen on a battlefield for concealing the whereabouts of troops and equipment from observance by an enemy.

The valve, according to the illustrated embodiment, comprises an annular chamber formed of concentric inner and outer walls, the outer wall having, in the periphery thereof, a multiplicity of equally spaced apart rectangular slots. An annulus, having a corresponding multiplicity of slots, is rotatably journalled, concentrically, on the outer periphery of the outer wall in order that, upon rotation thereof, relative to the annular chamber, the slots in the wall, and those in the annulus, come into or out of registry. A crank mechanism is coupled between the annulus, and the structure defining the annular chamber, to selectively rotate the annulus through a limited arc to bring the slots into and out of such registry. The valve is used to throttle the velocity of compressed gas product conducted thereto by a gas compressor, and to subdivide compressed gas issuing therefrom into a multiplicity of fine jets.
