A multi-mode solar power generation system can include a first energy conversion system that generates electricity from a working fluid heated by a portion of solar radiation focused by a plurality of heliostats. The multi-mode solar power generation system can also include a second energy conversion system that generates electricity from an unused portion of the focused solar radiation using a different energy conversion mode than that of the first energy conversion system. The second energy conversion system can include one or more photovoltaic converters, which directly convert solar radiation to electricity. The unused radiation from the first energy conversion system can include radiation spillage or dumped radiation from a thermal receiver of the first energy conversion system.

Solar power generation with multiple energy conversion modes

A bioreactor and bioreactor system are suitable for the growth of materials from algae. More specifically, the system preferred embodiments use concentrated sunlight in a solo- or co-generation system to produce algae and products therefrom as well as solar thermal energy.

High density bioreactor system, devices, and methods

A generating facility is provided for generating electricity from both solar and non-solar energy sources. The solar generating portion of the facility includes capability to directly generate electricity from solar insolation, or to store the solar energy in a tangible medium, including stored heat, or solar generating fuel. The generating facility is configured to generate electricity simultaneously from both solar and non-solar sources, as well a solely from immediate solar insolation and from solar energy stored in a tangible medium. Additionally, the solar generating capacity may be segregated; such that separate spectra of solar insolation are used to capture heat for steam turbine based electrical generation, capture light energy for photovoltaic based electrical generation, and to grow biomass to generate a solar fuel.

Hybrid generation with alternative fuel sources

The invention provides receivers which can be used to heat a working fluid to high temperature. In preferred embodiments, concentrated solar radiation is received and converted to heat at varying depths in the receiver such that multiple layers of surface are used to heat the working fluid. In addition, the depth-loading configuration helps to trap received heat to reduce radiant thermal loss.

The strategic method for process control is a continuation-in-part of a Knowledge-Engineering Protocol-Suite, (U.S. patent application Ser. No. 09/588,681 filed on 7 Jun. 2000) incorporated herein by reference, that generally includes methods and systems, apparatus for search-space organizational validation, and appurtenances for use therewith. The protocol-suite includes a search-space organizational validation method for synergistically combining knowledge bases of disparate resolution data-sets, such as by actual or simulated integrating of lower resolution expert-experience based model-like templates to higher resolution empirical data-capture dense quantitative search-spaces. The protocol-suite includes facile algorithmic tools for use with the method.

Strategic method for process control

A power generator provides power with minimal CO, NO, CO, CH, and particulate emissions and substantially greater efficiency as compared to traditional power generation techniques. Specifically nitrogen is removed from the combustion cycle, either being replaced by a noble gas as a working gas in a combustion engine. The noble gas is supplemented with oxygen and fuel, to provide a combustion environment substantially free of nitrogen or alternatively working in 100% oxygen-fuel combustion environments. Upon combustion, Very little to no nitrogen is present, and thus there is little production of NOcompounds. Additionally, the exhaust constituents are used in the production of power through work exerted upon expansion of the exhaust products, and the exhaust products are separated into their constituents of noble gas, water and carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide may be used in conjunction with a biomass to accelerate the biomass growth and to recover the oxygen enriched air resulting from algae photosynthesis for enhancing the operation of the power generator using the as Biomass for processing into methanol/ethanol and biological oils as fuel for the power generator. The biomass fuel is seen as a solar fuel and may be used in conjunctions with other solar fuels like heated thermal oil and others, as well as clean fossil fuels to optimize to clean, and efficient operation of the power generator in various regulatory contexts.

Low emission energy source

A system for automatic control of a process, comprising a process model using data and further comprising a data model for generating data for said process model and an empirical data extractor for extracting data from said process for said model, and wherein said data used by said process model is interchangeable between data obtained by said data model and data obtained by said extractor. The data model may be a partly statistical partly empirical orthogonal process model. The system is useful in allowing control systems using empirical prediction methods to perform automatic control before having built up a full results database.

Model predictive control (MPC) system using DOE based model

A Knowledge-Engineering Protocol-Suite is presented that generally includes methods and systems, apparatus for search-space organizational validation, and appurtenances for use therewith. The protocol-suite includes a search-space organizational validation method for synergistically combining knowledge bases of disparate resolution data-sets, such as by actual or simulated integrating of lower resolution expert-experience based model-like templates to higher resolution empirical data-capture dense quantitative search-spaces. Furthermore, from alternative technological vantages, the suite relates to situations where this synergetic combining is beneficially accomplished, such as in control systems, command control systems, command control communications systems, computational apparatus associated with the aforesaid, and to quantitative modeling and measuring tools used therewith. The protocol-suite also includes facile algorithmic tools for use with the method and a process-modeling computer for use in a distributed asynchronous system of process modeling computers.

Knowledge-engineering protocol-suite

In an automatic decision-making system, a method and a tool for the reduction of the dimension of data mining, which is automatically coupled to an empirical predictor of the system. The method includes a qualitative modeling of the interrelations between various objects whose attributes are relevant to a score made by the predictor according to which decisions are made, wherein this relevancy is determined by an input of a domain expert to the problem in hand. The model is called a Knowledge-Tree and its conclusions are represented by a graphical symbolization called the Knowledge-Tree map. Data mining, which follows the construction of the Knowledge-Tree map regards only datasets which are associated with logical and validated branches of the knowledge tree. Because the expert input which reduces the dimension of data mining was completed prior to data mining, interception by human reasoning is not needed after data mining and the decision making process can proceed automatically.

Method and tool for data mining in automatic decision making systems

A method of modeling a monitorable stage in a process is provided. The method including the steps of: (a) measuring at least one input value of a parameter of the monitorable stage of the process; (a) measuring at least one output value of the parameter of the monitorable stage of the process; and (c) utilizing the at least one input value and the at least one output value for constructing a process output empirical model for uncovering a functional relationship between the at least one input value and at least one output value, the step of constructing the process output empirical modeler being effected by: (i) dividing at least one interval of the parameter into a plurality of sub intervals, such that each of the at least one interval is divided into at least two of the sub intervals; (ii) classifying the at least one output value according to the plurality of sub intervals, thereby presenting the at least one output value as a plurality of discrete variables defining the at least one output value; and (iii) using the plurality of discrete variables defining the at least one output value for defining the functional relationship between the at least one input value and the at least one output value, thereby modeling the monitorable stage of the process.

System and method for monitoring process quality control

A method and system to enhance yield in multi-process manufacturing. The method comprising the translation of a performance parameter of a product into input variables to operate tools carrying our cooperating processes which built a structural element which determines the performance parameter, wherein the individual tools are process controlled. The method further comprising the integration of process control of individual separate processes or of stages in a process, into a combined and comprehensive (modular) process control in which the process parameters of a process are enslaved to accomplish the target output of the final process. Hence target output values of intermediate processes are dynamically reassigned during the manufacturing with respect to their initially designed values, in accordance with the output of their cooperating processes.

A mechanically rechargeable electric battery includes at least one electrical cell which has a pair of generally planar outer electrodes configured to define therebetween an interior space for an electrical power storage medium, and inner electrodes removably-mounted between the pair of outer electrodes so as to be in electrically conductive contact with the electrical power storage medium and configured to provide mechanical support for the electrical power storage medium and to be removable as a unit therewith from the cell. The cell is a metal-gas battery cell and the electrical power storage medium contained in the interior space contains a slurry containing active porous zinc particles saturated with an electrolyte solution. The outer electrodes define an opening communicating with the interior space, and the inner electrodes are configured for their removal from the interior space, via the opening, thereby enabling the simultaneous removal of the inner electrodes and the slurry from the interior space.
