An aqueous top of rail lubricant comprises a synthetic lubricant, a synthetic thickener, propylene glycol and ethanol. The lubricating composition is consumed in 5 to 15 minutes in the heat generated by a passing train. The lubricant is environmentally innocuous.

Top of rail lubricating method and composition

An improvement has been found in a continuous grease process. A saponification reaction product is continuously recycled through both a shear valve and a heat exchanger to produce a dehydrated grease of uniform consistency and temperature. Both recycle loops are controlled by means of a single shear valve.

Continuous grease process

Railroad wheel flange lubricating is carried out with a lubricating composition which is particularly useful in a locomotive-mounted applicator. The water base lubricant comprises a compatible blend of two polyoxyalkylene glycols, one a synthetic lubricant and the other a synthetic thickener. The lubricating composition is persistent and environmentally innocuous.

Railroad wheel flange lubricating method

A high temperature multipurpose grease is prepared from the lithium soap of a C.sub.12 to C.sub.24 hydroxy fatty acid, (e.g. 12-hydroxy stearic acid) and a dilithium soap of a C.sub.4 to C.sub.12 dicarboxylic acid, (e.g. dilithium azelate) wherein the acid mole ratios range from 3:1 to 0.5:1 respectively under carefully controlled processing conditions including controlled alkali addition and one step heating.

Preparation of high dropping point lithium complex soap grease

An experimental grease has been formulated with 8.5 wt % lithium 12-hydroxystearate in a base oil containing an additive composition of a synergistic blend of zinc dialkyldithiophosphates, zinc diamyldithiocarbamate, aromatic amine phosphate, sulfurized sperm oil substitute and the reaction product of coconut oil and diethanolamine. The lithium 12-hydroxystearate grease has been prepared by a standard kettle procedure. The grease composition exhibits a dropping point in the range expected of a lithium complex grease. The grease keeps its soap fiber structure intact at 390.degree. to 400.degree. F., typical of the melting range of lithium 12-hydroxystearate greases. The grease is useful for its long life in constant velocity joints.

Lithium soap grease additive

Lithium complex grease compositions which contain a certain weight ratio of calcium acetate are provided which demonstrate a constant viscosity over a wide temperature range.

Lithium complex soap thickened grease containing calcium acetate

A continuous process for manufacture of soap thickened grease compositions where a saponifiable material and a metal base are continuously introduced at an elevated temperature into a saponification zone maintained at superatmospheric pressure and saponified under turbulent conditions, wherein the saponified product is mixed with an aqueous solution of oil-insoluble additive materials at a superatmospheric pressure sufficient for maintaining all water in the liquid phase, wherein the saponified material-additive mixture is heated to an elevated temperature of at least 350.degree. F., wherein the heated saponified material additive mixture is flowed into a dehydration zone maintained at a reduced pressure for flash vaporizing substantially all water therefrom and producing a dehydrated saponified material having oil-insoluble additive evenly dispersed therethrough as particles not exceeding about 10 microns, and wherein the dehydrated saponified material is blended with lubricating oil to produce a grease product.

Method for continuous grease manufacture

A process for manufacturing high dropping point aluminum complex soap thickened greases having selected consistency, water resistance, rheopectic properties, and antiwear properties.

Process for manufacturing aluminum complex soap thickened grease

A grease may be made having synergistic extreme pressure properties using a major amount of a base oil and a thickener and a minor amount of low density polyethylene and known extreme pressure enhancing additives.
