The present invention relates to binders based on polymer dispersions and terephthalic bisamides with high water vapor transmission, and also to their use in formulations, especially for wood coatings.

An aqueous coating formulation for tannin-containing substrates can include a substituted C-Cpolyalkyleneimine. Reacting a C-Cpolyalkyleneimine having a weight-average molecular weight of from 500 to 10,000 g/mol with a carboxylic acid derivative can produce the substituted polyalkyleneimine. The carboxylic acid derivative includes at least one Cto Calkyl group or Cto Calkenyl group. Substrates that contain tannin and are coated with this aqueous coating formulation exhibit outstanding resistance with respect to color runs and color strikethrough.

The present invention provides a process for preparing emulsion polymer particles of a hollow core/shell structure in the presence of a monomer plasticizer having a ceiling temperature less than 181&#xb0; C. wherein a polymerization inhibitor or reducing agent is not added to the aqueous emulsion of the core shell particles during the neutralization and swelling stage. The obtained core shell particles are useful in paints, paper coatings, foams, and cosmetics.
