Abrasive articles and method for preparing them

An improved method for preparing a molding material for abrasive articles has been developed. The method includes the step of continuously blending an abrasive material with a curing agent and measured portions of two phenol-novolac resins, one of which has a phenol-formaldehyde molar ratio in the range of about 1:0.2 to 1:0.35. The blending composition can also include various other materials, such as fillers. The resulting product is a flowable, granular material homogeneously coated with the phenol-novolac resins. The product can be directly molded, i.e., without an aging step, into various abrasive articles, such as grinding wheels. In another embodiment, either a continuous or discontinuous technique can be used to blend the phenol-novolac resins, and the molded product is then cold pressed or warm pressed at a pressing temperature less than about 140.degree. C.

Method for preparing mixtures for abrasive articles

A homogenous non-tacky thermosetting plastic powder mixture formed by mixing component A comprising a solid phenol novolac resin powder and a hardener containing a small amount of an oil-like substance liquid at room temperature with component B comprising a liquid resol, fillers and optionally additives which when containing an abrasive are useful for the production of filler-containing shaped elements or resin-bonded grinding elements.

Thermosetting plastic powder mixtures

A binder mixture containing lignin or lignins with reactive groups and phenol-novolac in a weight ratio of 95:5 to 50:50 useful for the production of non-woven fabrics and wood fiber materials.

Binder mixtures containing lignin and phenol novolaks

An aqueous resol solution produced by an alkaline condensation of a phenolic compound with an aldehyde in a molar ratio of 1:1.5 to 2.5 with an alkali metal content of 1 to 5.0% by weight of the reaction solution, neutralizing the solution after the end of condensation at least partially with an aromatic hydroxy carboxylic acid at a temperature not greater than 50.degree. C. and then concentrating the reaction mixture which is readily dilutable with water.

Binder mixture

A binding agent for molding compositions and molded bodies produced by reacting a low molecular weight lignin from the Organosolv process with phenol in a weight ratio of 1:20 to 3:1 at 100.degree. to 180.degree. C., adjusting the pH to an acidic value and condensing the mixture with 0.2 to 0.9 moles of formaldehyde per mole of phenol at 60.degree. to 120.degree. C. to form the binding agent useful for producing curable molding compositions, high-temperature molding compositions, refractory products, textile fleeces and friction coatings as well as carbon materials.

Lignin modified binding agents

A binding agent comprising 95 to 50% by weight of a furan resin, 5 to 50% by weight of lignin from the Organosolv process and organic and/or inorganic acid curing agents useful for the production of curable molding compositions, high temperature-stable molding substances and refractory products, especially casting cores and casting molds.

Novel low-emission, cold-curing binding agents

A binding agent for molded bodies and molding compositions produced by prereacting a mixture of 5 to 60% by weight of lignin or a lignin fraction produced by the Organosolv process and 40 to 95% by weight of a phenol novolac resin and subjecting the latter to high shear forces in a kneader or extruder and optionally mixing the same with a curing agent useful in molding compositions and high temperature-stable molded products such as refractory products, friction coatings, textile fleeces and carbon or graphite materials.

Binding agents

A granular molding material with a binder comprising a phenol novolac and a polyisocyanate which hardens upon addition of amine catalysts wherein the molar ratio of phenol to formaldehyde in the novolac is 1:0.25 to 1:0.5 and has the formula ##STR1## wherein R, R' and R' are individually selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl of 1 to 12 carbon atoms, hydroxy, cycloalkyl of 3 to 12 carbon atoms and an anellated ring and X is an integer from 0 to 4 or &gt;4 with the percent molar distribution based on X is as follows:

Novel molding materials

A heat-hardenable binder comprising (a) a phenolic resin of a phenolic compound and formaldehyde in a molar ratio of 1:1 to 1:2 and (b) an effective amount of a hardener mixture of hexamethylenetetramine and an acidic latent hardening agent with reduced emission problems and curing rapidly.

Novel heat-hardenable binders phenol-formaldehyde+HMT+acid

Improved high temperature resistant molding materials containing customary filler materials and additives and a carbon forming bonding agent which is a phenol novolac with a molar ratio of phenol to formaldehyde of 1 to 0.2 to 1 to 0.35 of high quality and free of solvents useful as refractory products, carbon materials, abrasive wheels, friction lining and the like.

High temperature resistant molding materials

A non-woven textiles comprising a web of organic fibers bonded together by a binder applied to the fibers as a powdered mixture of a non-heat reactive phenolic resin and at least one thermoreactive condensation resin selected from the group consisting of phenolic resins, epoxy resins and amino resins and then fused and a method of producing said textiles.
