An optical wireless communication (OWC) unit for transmitting and/or receiving data installable in a further device comprises at least one transmitter device for transmitting modulated light comprising an OWC signal of said data and/or at least one receiver device for receiving modulated light comprising an OWC signal representative of said data, wherein the at least one receiver device comprises at least one detector. The OWC unit further comprises analogue electronic circuitry for processing electronic signals and at least one power connection and/or at least one data connection for connection to a power source and/or processing resource of the further device. The OWC unit is operable to provide OWC communication under control of said further device and/or so as to transmit data from/provide data to said further device. The OWC unit is for use in an OWC system having an analogue bandwidth greater than or equal to 80 MHz.

Optical wireless communication (OWC) unit

An optical wireless communication system comprises a signal providing apparatus configured to provide a data signal, a driver apparatus separate from the signal providing apparatus and coupled to the signal providing apparatus by a signal cable, wherein the driver apparatus is configured to receive the data signal via the signal cable and to process the data signal to produce a driving signal, and a luminaire comprising a modulateable light source, wherein the modulateable light source is configured to be driven by the driving signal, thereby to produce modulated light, wherein the driver apparatus is positioned adjacent to or within the luminaire.

Optical wireless communication system

A luminaire driver apparatus for use with one or more light emitting diodes or other light sources, comprises voltage control circuitry configured to regulate a supply voltage to one or more light emitting diodes or other light sources; driving circuitry configured to provide a drive current to the one or more light emitting diodes or other light sources, the drive current being dependent on the supply voltage, wherein the driving circuitry is configured to modulate the drive current based on a modulated drive signal such that the one or more light emitting diodes or other light sources produces an optical signal, wherein at least one of the driving circuitry and control circuitry are operable to adapt to a plurality of different types of light emitting diode or other light source. Thereby providing a universal driver function.
