There is provided a method for generating traffic data indicative of a traffic volume and/or traffic density within a navigable network in an area covered by an electronic map, the electronic map comprising a plurality of segments representing navigable elements of the navigable network. The method generally comprises obtaining positional data relating to the movement of a plurality of devices along the navigable elements represented by the segments of the electronic map; determining, using (at least) positional data relating to one or more congested segments within a region of the navigable network, an estimate of one or more average penetration rates for the region; determining a sample volume for a non-congested segment within the region based on the obtained positional data; and estimating, using the determined sample volume and a selected one of the average penetration rates for the region, a traffic volume and/or traffic density for the non-congested segment. Also provided are systems for performing the method. Accordingly, traffic volume and/or traffic densities can be estimated from probe data.

Methods and systems for generating traffic volume or traffic density data

A method and system of detecting when a navigable element previously determined to be closed is in an open state is disclosed, the navigable element forming part of a network of navigable elements within a geographic area, the navigable elements being represented by segments of an electronic map. Positional data relating to the movement of a plurality of devices along the navigable elements of the navigable network with respect to time is obtained, and a navigable element is identified as being in a closed state based at least on the positional data and a first visit interval associated with the segment representing the navigable element. The positional data is then used to determine a second visit interval for the segment representing the navigable element, and the navigable element is changed to be in an open state when a parameter based on the determined second visit interval for the segment representing the navigable element passes a predetermined threshold value.

Methods and systems for detecting an open navigable element

A method of detecting the closure and/or opening of a navigable element forming part of a network of navigable elements within a geographic area. A passability parameter is associated with each segment of an electronic map representing the navigable network and indicates a likelihood of closure of the element represented by the segment. The value of the passability parameter decays over time. When a device is detected on the element represented by the segment, the passability parameter is increased, and when a closure report is received relating to the segment, the parameter is decreased. In one set of embodiments, when the passability parameter decreases below a first threshold value, the element represented by the segment is determined to be potentially closed. In another set of embodiments, when the passability parameter increases above a second threshold value, the closed element represented by the segment is determined to be opened.

Methods and systems for detecting a closure and/or opening of a navigable element

A method of detecting the closure of a navigable element forming part of a network of navigable elements within a geographic area. A server obtains positional data relating to the movement of a plurality of devices along the navigable element with respect to time. The positional data is used to determine an elapsed time since a device was last detected on the navigable element, and the determined elapsed time is compared to an expected time interval between consecutive devices being detected on the navigable element. The navigable element is identified as being potentially closed, subject to one or more optional validation steps, when the determined elapsed time exceeds the expected time interval, e.g. by a predetermined amount.

Methods and systems for detecting a closure of a navigable element

A method is disclosed for determining a route in an area covered by an electronic map, the map comprising a plurality of segments representing navigable segments of a navigable network in the area covered by the electronic map. The method involves generating a plurality of routes through the navigable network between a first location and a second location, determining a relative traffic flow value for each of the routes using data indicative of a relative current capacity of segments of the navigable network, and selecting a given one of the routes from the plurality of routes for use in navigating between the first location and the second location. The probability of a given one of the plurality of routes being selected is based on the determined relative flow value for the route.

Generating routes to optimise traffic flow

A method of identifying navigable stretches that are partially closed, e.g. due to the presence of roadworks, in a navigable network within a geographic area. A server obtains positional data relating to the movement of a plurality of devices along a navigable stretch with respect to time in a given time period, wherein the time period is a period of non-congested traffic flow. The positional data is used to determine an average speed of travel along the navigable stretch in the given time period. The determined average speed of travel is compared to a free flow speed for the stretch, and the navigable stretch is identified as being partially closed when the determined average speed of travel is lower than the free flow speed by a predetermined value.

Methods and systems for detecting a partial closure of a navigable element

A method of detecting the closure of a road element is disclosed; the road element being one of a set of alternative incoming or outgoing elements at a node in a network of navigable elements. A server obtains positional data relating to the position of a plurality of devices with respect to time traversing the node. A count is determined of the number of devices in a consecutive sequence of device selecting a given one of the navigable elements from among the set of elements. The count is compared to a predetermined threshold to determine whether another one of the elements is closed. The threshold is based upon the relative probability of the element to which the count relates being taken from the set of road elements.

A method and system for identifying a lateral deviation in the course of a road segment is described. Positional data is collected from a plurality of vehicles travelling along a road stretch. A map matching error associated with the position data is used to determine an average map matching error and average absolute map matching error for travel along the road stretch. A lateral deviation in course is identified when the average map matching error measures are both above a given threshold, and where the detected deviation is of a given minimum length. Other indicators of deviation can be considered including a direction of the possible deviation, and impact on travel in the opposite driving direction. Data relating to the determined deviation is generated, including a speed of travel through the deviated region, and used to enhance traffic information.

Method and system for determining a deviation in the course of a navigable stretch

A method of verifying and/or improving a message indicative of an event affecting traffic flow on at least a portion of one or more navigable segments is described. The method involves obtaining positional data relating to the movement of a plurality of devices along a navigable stretch including a navigable stretch identified by the message as being affected, and using the positional data to verify and/or improve the message. The positional data is live data and is used to obtain data relating to the speed of travel of the devices along the navigable stretch including the stretch identified by the message. The speed data can be used to determine a spatial extent of the affected stretch and/or an expected speed of travel along the stretch.
