A mounting system secures a component in a tubular, which includes a compression element and an annular flow guide. The flow guide is attached to the component by a threaded connection. The compression collar and flow guide have complementary profiles on their respective inner and outer surfaces, which when the compression collar is coaxially urged along the outer surface of the flow guide, the compression collar is radially expanded into compressive engagement with an inner surface of the tubular. A thrust ring threads onto the flow guide, and when rotated, abuts an end of the compression collar to urge the compression collar along the flow guide. The compression collar is rotatable with respect to the flow guide, and includes fingers that register with pockets on an outer housing of the component. Registering the fingers and pockets resists loosening of the threaded connection between the flow guide and component.

Inner bore coupling assembly

A velocity of a flow of drilling fluid is adjusted to a magnitude that is within the operating range of a mud pulser disposed in the flow of the drilling fluid. A stator in the mud pulser directs the flow of drilling fluid along one or more separate paths. The paths are defined by channels that extend axially along an outer surface of the stator and that are spaced angularly apart from one another. Also in the mud pulser is a rotor that alternatingly blocks the paths. The velocity is adjusted with a plug assembly that blocks flow through a designated channel. One type of plug assembly is a disk with passages that register with less than all of the channels, and that mounts on a downstream end of the stator. Other types of plug assemblies mount in the designated channel to block the flow path.

Regulating flow to a mud pulser

A guiding sleeve for aligning downhole tubulars includes a body having a first end portion, a second end portion and an intermediate portion extending therebetween. The first end portion is receptive of a terminal end of a first tubular and the second end portion includes a guiding feature that promotes axial alignment of the first tubular with a second tubular.

An apparatus for generating pressure variances in a flowing fluid includes a first member having a body and a second member. The second member is displaceable about a rotational axis to at least partially block fluid flow through one or more channels in the first member and at least partially reduce the blockage of this fluid flow. The second member has a hub and at least one section extending axially and radially from the hub relative to the rotational axis of the second member. A related method includes guiding fluid across the first member using the channel(s); selectively blocking the fluid flow through the channel(s) using at least one section of a second member; and moving the second member using an actuator to reduce the blockage of the flow of fluid through the channel(s).

An modular apparatus for generating electrical power in a borehole penetrating the earth includes a body comprising first and second mechanical connectors at opposing ends and first and second electrical connectors at the opposing ends, the mechanical connectors and the electrical connectors being configured to connect with the same type of corresponding connectors on another modular apparatus when the modular apparatus and the another modular apparatus are stacked together. The modular apparatus further includes: an electrical generator having a rotor and stator in mechanical communication with the first and second mechanical connectors and in electrical communication with the first and second electrical connectors; and a turbine wheel coupled to or integrated with the rotor and comprising one or more turbine blades that are configured to interact with fluid flowing through the borehole causing the turbine wheel to rotate and the rotor to rotate in order to generate the electrical power.

Modular downhole generator

An apparatus for generating pressure pulses in a fluid flowing in a downhole tool includes a stator, a rotor, a motor, and an electronics module. The stator and the rotor each have one or more flow passages. The motor oscillates the rotor relative to the stator to align and misalign the flow passage(s) of the stator and the rotor to thereby generate the pressure pulses. The electronics module drives the motor using at least a first signal and a second signal. The motor causes the rotor to have an information-transmitting oscillation in response to the first signal and a cleaning oscillation in response to the second signal.

Pulser cleaning for high speed pulser using high torsional resonant frequency

A bottomhole assembly (BHA) has a first section, a second section, and a drilling motor disposed along the second BHA section. The first BHA section is connected to the second BHA section with a flex sub. A steering assembly positioned along the BHA includes a first steering unit and an axially spaced apart second unit. Each steering unit has at least one pad. During operation, the first steering unit generates a force in a first direction and the second steering unit generates a force in a second direction different from the first direction. The first and the second steering units thereby cooperate to axially misalign the first BHA section and the second BHA section at the flex sub.

Drilling system with adaptive steering pad actuation

A method and related apparatus for forming a wellbore in a subterranean formation includes forming a drill string that has a drill bit at a distal end, a drilling motor configured to rotate the drill bit with a drive shaft; a joint coupled to the drive shaft; and an actuator assembly displacing the drive shaft between a first and a second deflection angle, the drive shaft being movable at each of the deflection angles until a predetermined weight is applied to the bit. The method also includes conveying the drill bit through the wellbore and fixing the drive shaft in at least one of the first and the second deflection angles by applying a predetermined weight on the bit.
