The network communication system includes a wireless interface to exchange wireless signals during at least one network connection, and a handover controller that uses a route profile identifying access points distributed over a given route or region that are capable of supporting the network connection, and to handover the network connection between access points as the device travels along the given route or through a region according to the route profile.

Wireless hand-over in mobile deployments

Methods and apparatus for triggering roaming in a mobile network device are disclosed. A speed of the network device is detected. One or more maximum/minimum trigger values corresponding to one or more trigger events are ascertained at the speed of the network device. One or more trigger counters associated with the one or more trigger events are maintained. Roaming of the network device is triggered when one of the trigger counters associated with one of the trigger events is equal to or exceeds (or is less than or equal to) one of the trigger values corresponding to the trigger event at the speed of the network device.

Methods and apparatus for reducing roaming latency in a mobile node

The present invention communication network system and method facilitates authentication and registration in a communication network as mobile nodes move from one geographical region to another. Multiple wireless domain services (WDSs) share client authentication information permitting relatively seamless roaming between subnets with minimal interruptions and delays. In one embodiment, a wireless domain service network communication method is performed utilizing partial authentication processes. A mobile node engages in an authentication protocol with a first wireless domain service (WDS) access point in a first subnet. The authentication credentials are forwarded to a second wireless domain service in a second subnet if the authentication protocol is successfully completed. The forwarded authentication credentials are utilized to authenticate the client entering the service area of the second wireless domain service in the second subnet. The authentication credentials can be 'pushed' or 'pulled' from the first wireless domain service to the second wireless domain service.

Inter subnet roaming system and method

A system and method that facilitates client address updating in a communication network is presented. Client address lists are maintained and updated with a single mechanism deployed flexibly across different communication environment boundaries. Network devices update address lists for clients deployed across boundaries of wireless communication environments (e.g., an IEEE 802.11 compliant environment) and wired communication environments (e.g., an IEEE 802.3 compliant environment). Interruptions and delays in information communication due to stale client registration and tracking activities are minimized.

Communication device client update system and method

A method for communicating data includes receiving at a main card a first media access control (MAC) address of a first peripheral component interconnect (PCI) card coupled to the main card and determining whether the first peripheral card has been previously used with the main card based on the received first MAC address. The method includes assigning a first previous ID value to the first peripheral card if the first peripheral card has been previously used with the main card and assigning a first new ID value to the first peripheral card if the first peripheral card has not been previously used with the main card. The method also includes storing the first new ID value with the received first MAC address in memory of the main card.
