A method of synchronizing a textual view, a block diagram view and a three-dimensional view of the system being modeled is provided. Aspects of the model can be displayed via a textual viewer, a block diagram viewer and a 3D viewer in an embodiment. A user may make a change to the block diagram representing the model via the block diagram viewer interface and changes may be dynamically made to the textual representation of the model via the textual viewer and to the 3D representation of the model via the 3D viewer. Exemplary embodiments may maintain synchronization of model views to allow dynamic updating of model views as determined by an environment in which the model views are operating.

Methods and systems for translating models generated in one modeling environment into models that can be used in other modeling environments are disclosed. Because models are created using different data formats in different modeling environments, models generated in one modeling environment are generally incompatible with other models in other modeling environments. Therefore, the present invention provides a neutral data format that can store information on models generated in one modeling environment, and that can be used by other modeling environments to create their models. The present invention may export models created in one modeling environment into the neutral data format. The neutral data format may subsequently be imported into other modeling environments in which new models are generated using the information contained in the neutral data format. The present invention also provides animation of the newly generated models by animation clients via open animation interfaces. The open animation interfaces support multiple animation clients at a simultaneous time.

Translating of geometric models into block diagram models

A method of synchronizing a block diagram view of a system being modeled with a three-dimensional view of the system being modeled and with the underlying block diagram model data is disclosed. Changes in the block diagram model data are reflected in both views to the degree that the views contain a point of correspondence. User selected changes to the block diagram view of the system being modeled cause changes in the underlying model data. A view generator examines the model data to determine if a point of correspondence equivalent to the changed portion of the block diagram view exists in the three dimensional view. If a point of correspondence exists in the three-dimensional view the view is updated to reflect the changes in the block diagram view. Similarly, user selected changes in the three-dimensional view cause changes in the underlying block diagram model data. The view generator examines the model data to determine if a point of correspondence equivalent to the changed portion of the three dimensional view exists in the block diagram view. In the event that a point of correspondence is found, the block diagram view is updated.

Methods and systems for translating models generated in one modeling environment into models that can be used in other modeling environments. In particular, information regarding a relationship between components of models in one modeling environment is translated into corresponding elements of models in other modeling environments. In some embodiments of the present invention, for example, mate information between rigid parts in geometric models may be translated into corresponding elements in other modeling environments. The mate information between parts in geometric models may be translated into information representing the degrees of freedom (DoFs) of the parts in the geometric models. The information on the DoFs of the parts in the geometric models may be utilized to build up corresponding elements in other modeling environments that represent the relationship between the parts of the geometric models.
